Generally speaking, clippers fall into four grades: light, medium, heavy and super duty. Let’s have a closer look at what each of these grades mean.
Heavy duty grade clippers are suitable for trimming and full body clipping on most coat types. A Heavy Duty clipper will manage most areas of the body on single, medium, curly and double coated coats. The Heavy Duty clipper is known as the ‘All-Rounder’. Heavy Duty
Light Duty
Light clippers should generally be used for trimming only. This grade of clipper is typically not suitable for full body grooming. You can use a Light Duty to touch up around the ears, eyes and paws on single coats. Medium duty clippers can generally handle light grooming on single to medium coated dogs. You will be able to use this grade of clipper for trimming on most coat types. A Medium Duty clipper will not be suitable for full body grooming on doubled coated, thick, non-shed (Oodle breeds) or wiry coated breeds. Medium Duty
Navigating clippers can feel overwhelming. Let’s simplify it. Generally speaking, there are two types of clippers: small clippers for light grooming around the face, ears and feet and standard clippers for full body grooming. So, if you are up to the task of clipping your pet top-to-tail, front-to-back and everything in the middle then you will be looking for a standard clipper. Something described as heavy or super duty. Asking a small clipper to do this job is kind of like asking a Great Dane to be your guard dog; they might look the part but at the end of the day they’re too gentle for the job.
Super Duty
The top of the line! To clip it long story short, this grade of clipper can handle anything. Every breed, any coat type as well as full body grooming on large animals like horses.
