Draft HV Standard Installation & Maintenance Modules

Operations training

High Voltage Standard / V2 PUBLIC HEARING DRAFT 0.1

ELEMENT 13.1 - APPLYING HV ISOLATIONS AND EARTH

Learning objectives:

114) Perform lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures correctly (Skills, intermediate level)

115) Perform Verification of Absence of Voltage correctly (Skills, intermediate level)

116) Recognise the purpose of interlocks as control for safe HV operations (Knowledge, basic level)

117) Perform earthing protocols and procedures correctly (Skills, intermediate level)

118) Apply appropriate Portable Earthing tools and equipment for safe HV working (Skills, intermediate level)

119) Explain risks and controls related to hazards from Stored Energies, Thermal, Chemical, Radiation, Inductance (Knowledge, intermediate level)

The instructor shall:

Explain and demonstrate control, communication and good practice when applying HV Isolations and Earth.

a.

Applying LOTO - locks and warning signs

b. Verification of absence of voltage / Proving dead / Zero energy

c. Interlocks as control, including Trapped Key Switches

d.

Circuit Main Earthing

e.

Portable Earthing, tools and equipment:

f.

Mechanical Isolations and Low Voltage Isolations

Lead a discussion with participants on why earths are applied including:

a. Preliminary earths: applied before issue of a Safety Document to prevent inadvertent energisation

b. Additional earths: to mitigate induced or trapped energy (impressed voltages)

c. Mobile equipment or structural earths: portable earths applied to temporary conductive structures, objects, or equipment to create an equipotential zone
