out devils; they shall speak with new tongues) IS They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing:, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall ‘recover. 10 So then, after the'Lord had spoken unto them» he was received up Into heaveh, and sat on the right hand of God. 00 And they went forth, und preached every where, the Lord working: with them, and confirming: the word with signs following:. Amen. Luke 24:40 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city o f, Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. 50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 51 And It came to pass,, while he blessed them, he was parted, from them, and carried-UP into heaven. 52 And they worshipped him, and re turned to Jerusalem with great Joy: 53 And were continually in the tem ple, praising: and blessing God. Amen. GOLDEN TEXT : «Go ye Jnto all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mk. 16:15). DEVOTIONAL READING: Isa. 49:1-6. Outline and Exposition L T he P resence with the D isciples (Matt.- 28:16-20) ■ HE WOMEN who had gone to had informed the disciples that Jesus would meet them in Galilee (V. 7.). Hence, the disciples went into Galilee and found the risen Lord waiting for them (vs. 16, 17), They worshiped Him, even though some s t i l l were doubtful concerning the fact of His resurrection. He told them all authority had been given Him in heaven and on earth. . It was a fact for them to remember in days when the power and authority of human governments should become Seemingly dominant. We, too, must depend upon this great fact. Disciples n e e d not be troubled by anything they would meet, If they would re member that nothing could be done by men or demons without their Lord’s permission. The Lord also told them what their business was to be. They were to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the • triune God, and teaching them all things He had commanded them. Thus their business would be world wide, bringing to the world the knowl edge of the living God who upholds all things and in whom all live and move and have their being. He further told them that He would be with them “all the days” even unto “ the consummation of the age” (R. V. margin). There is considerable discus sion among brethren as to what this commission means and to what group of disciples it was given. But under neath all the discussion the fact re mains that disciples of today have a business which consists of bringing to the world the knowledge of the cruci-

fied, risen, and exalted Lord Jesu6 Christ. ÏL T he P romise to the D isciples (Mk. 16:14-20) Sweeping away the disciples’ hesi tancy to believe in His physical resur rection, the Lord gave them the out line~of what they should do. They were to preach the gospel to every creature', with the assurance that who soever believed and was baptized would be saved, and whosoever be lieved not would be damned, or con demned. He also assured them that signs would accompany the witness ing. Demons would be subject to the Lord’s ambassadors; venomous rep tiles would not harm them; poison Would not affect them, and ; they w o u l d heal whomsoever they laid hands upon. .The record in thè Book of the Acts reveals the truth and pow er of this promise. Having given them thé promise, the Lord Jesus Christ was received up into heaven,’ and His followers went forth and preached everywhere, the L o r d meanwhile fulfilling His promise of His presence and His power with them. The words for us to consider particularly are “the Lord working with them, and confirming the word.” Wherever disciples go forth at the leading of the Lord as they preach the Word today, they may be fully assured that the Lord will be working with them and confirniing the Word as it is preached.' m . T he P ower for the D isciples (Lk. 24:49-53) - The power for service by the dis ciples does not reside in their knowl edge, however wide, nor in their en thusiasm, however great, nor in any thing found within themselves, but in the Holy Spirit alone, He is the One who directs the work, places individ uals In the proper sphere of service, and provides the power; rather He is the power for all true Christian serv ice (cf. 1 Cor. 2; Eph. 6:10,v17, 18; Acts 1:8). Having ended His instructions, the Lord lifted up His hands in blessing upon the disciples and was “carried up into heaven.” No one âfterward could ever convince those disciples that their Lord, and their Lord in BLACKBOARD LESSON '00 4£ IOTO flu.
