there is something reassuring about It in this connection. Its existence proves to us today that the disciples were not gullible men .who could be led astray by fairy tales without eviden tial proof. And the fact that even the most skeptical were finally and com pletely convinced by the risen Lord’s appearances over the space of “forty days” should give us strong assurance that the resurrection actually took place. 5. "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth" (v. 18). The Greek word means “authority,” which undoubtedly includes the idea of “power,” but. goes beyond it. And we are intended to understand from this claim that this Person who speaks is not only the omnipotent God, but that He is also as Man invested with authority to rule in heaven and on earth. He is the King. All authority is His. The Christian should find great consolation in these words just now. It helps us to evaluate properly
human flesh, was not In heaven. They went forth knQWing that He would be watching over all their experiences and providing for them in all their circumstances, even to the end of the age. Filled with joy, they returned to Jerusalem and were corttinually prais ing God, while waiting for the mani festation of the promised Holy Spirit. Today we need not wait; the Holy Spirit has come. Even in the present days of uncertainty and world-wide disturbance, we may be fully assured of the Lord’s presence; we may rest on His unchanging promise, and go forth to witness for Him clothed with His power. Points and Problems 1. "Then the eleven disciples went" (Matt. 28:16). The expression "the eleven" strikes a note of tragedy. The twelfth had perished rforever (John 17:12). Mere profession of discipleship is not enough. Ye must be born again. 2. "Into Galilee, unto the mountain where Jesus had appointed them" (v. 16, E. V.). This appointment With the disciples had been made definitely by the Lord before His death (Matt. 26:32), and hàd been repeated after His resurrection from the tomb (28:7, 10). Evidently the exact place of meet ing in Galilee had been specified, though not recorded by Matthew. The Lord would meet them on a “moun tain,” not in a cave, blessed prophecy of our final abiding-place. “And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusa lem” (Rev. 21:10). 3. "And when they saw him, they worshipped him'! (v. 17). Again we are granted a foregleam of the future when, in the mountain of the Lord’s House, we shall see His face and worship Him. When the true Christian enters for the first time the presence of the One who loved and gave Him self for us, the feeling of the heart will be too deep for utterance. In the first transport of that unutterablé joy, there will be no place 'fo? mere words. It will be enough just to be with Him, and worship Him. There will also be joyful service in the final city, but that will come later. To worship Him will be first. 4. "But some doubted"' (v. 17). Sometimes we speak of Thomas as the “ doubting disciple,” forgetting that there were others. This meeting on the mbuntain took place a f t e r t h a t memorable meeting in which Thomas had his doubts settled forever (John 20:26-29), and I do not t h i n k we should put Thomas among the “ some” who doubted here. Although doubt is not the proper Christian attitude,
