DAILY Devotional Readings

Or, in darker semblance, cross-crown’d Calvary. —J. Montgomery. 7. Poured Out- “The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts” (Rom. 5:5). More literally, this reads, "has been poured out," showing the gracious work of Another, even of the Holy Spirit. Further, the pouring out pre sents a blessed contrast with that which is frozen and that which is stiff; there is a wondrous “filling” of nook and crevice, as it were, and God’s love melts or removes the ici ness of self-seeking. Oh, that this may be your experience and mine at all times!—Percy W. Heward. % 8. The Desert Place of Prayer “And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed” (Lk. 5:16). The word “wilderness” is the same word used elsewhere of the desert. Christ sought the desert for the pur pose of prayer. The desert helps our prayer life in three ways. First, the loneliness of the desert makes us seek the companionship of the heavenly Father in prayer. Second, the bareness of the land turns our attention to the beauties of the Lord. Third, the very out-of-doors creates in us a spirit of worship. . . . God can make the desert a valuable place for us. . . . If we follow God’s leading, we may discover hidden treasures in the desert. —Fred Hartley Wight.* 9. His Will Accomplished “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13). Every Christian is in the world to do God’s will, to carry out His plan, His purpose. It is a pity that the prayer, “Thy will be done,” was ever inscribed on a single tombstone, for it has degenerated in meaning-to “Thy will be submitted to.” Its real mean ing is "Thy will be accomplished.” “Things deemed impossible I dare, Thine is the call and Thine the care, Thy wisdom shall the way prepare, Thy will be done.” —A London Journalist. 10. Never Alone "At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me. . . . Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me” (2 Tim. 4:16, 17). He that is with the King is ,not alone, though forsaken of all others. He on whom the sun shines is not without light, though all his candles are put out. If God be our God, He is our all.—Richard Baxter. « *Reprinted from Nature Sermons by special permission o f Zondervan Pub . House, Grand Rapids,' Mich,

1. Together for Good "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God” (Rom. 8:28). You sprinkle sand on a brass plate fixed on a pedestal, and draw a bow across the edge of the plate, touching it at the same time with two fingers. Then, because of this touch, the sand does not fall into confusion but into an ordered pattern like music made visible. . ... There is nothing in the vibrations of the bow to make a pat tern. Suffering, hunger, poverty, baf fling circumstances cannot of them selves make anything but confusion. But if there be the touch- of the Hand, all these things work together for good, not for ill, not for discord, but for something like the harmony of music.—Amy Carmichael. Sufficient “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you” C2 Cor. 9:8). Wearied, Lord, I coihe to Thee, Seeking Thy sufficiency. Hungry, come to Thee for food. Thou my portion, Thou art good. Saddened, find in Thee my joy. Let Thy praise my tongue employ. - Rest and food and joy to me, All I need I find in Thee. HBra|r —Doris Coffin Aldrich. Whose Home? “Whatsoever ye. do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Cor. 10:31). My father came into my house soon after I was married, looked around into every room, and said, “Yes, it is very nice, but nobody will know, walking through here, whether you belong to God or the devil.” 9. soul-binning. I went through and looked at the rooms again, and I thought: “He is right” So we made up our minds straightway that there should be no room in our house, henceforth, that had not some message, by picture or wall text, to tell that we serve the King.—G. Campbell Morgan. 4. Spiritual Relish “Thou h a s t put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased” (Psa. 4:7). He who cultivates a sound spiritual taste cannot relish frivolity. Most of what is said about amusement is said to no purpose. Taste, not logic, rules the world. A new nature—a fine taste —a relish for and a delight in the sublime and holy, the infinite and eternal; plant this in the soul of a man, and he looks upon the world’s amusements as mere cobwebs. —Selected. 5. Continuous Victory “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus' Christ” (1 Cor. 35:57). Love is the actuating principle by which God’s universe is governed. Evil, like a pernicious cancer, must be cut out, lest love be turned to hate. The gift of God’s Son to save man kind was 4he supreme proof of His infinite love. Obedience to God can only bring fullness of joy, peace, and eternal freedom. . . . Victory over every Canaanite habit and wrong motive is assured to those into whose hearts the love of God has been poured.—Lewis H. Jamison. In the Hour of Trial “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities. . . . Let us therefore come boldy unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 3:15, 16). In the.hour of trial, Jesus, plead for me, Lest by base denial I depart from Thee; When Thou see’st me waver, With a look recall, Nor for fear or favor suffer me to fall. With forbidden pleasure would this vain world charm, Or its sordid treasures spread to work me harm; Bring to my remembrance sad Geth- semane, ^ 6.
