for the second. Do not be satisfied with running the colors of your prayers into one another, till there is no pic ture to look at but just a huge daub, a smear of colors badly laid on. .. —Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 15. Bound Together “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you” (John 15:12). The disciples were bound together in the bonds of a sacred, a divine love (in that upper room). Jesus Christ was the center around which they were all united. At the Last Supper that love was not yet in existence; they there disputed as to who should be the chief. But Christ’s cross had bound them together as nothing else could have done. The Spirit that they received on the evening of the resur rection day made them one spirit and one body.—Andrew Murray. 16. Blossoms in the Wilderness “The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose” (Isa. 35:1). The power to find pleasure not only in the masses of blossom that gather round the ruin of human hope, but in each spray, and more, in the very petals and stamens of each little flower, and even in the faint pencil line of the shadow of the stamen on the petal, is one of the dearest gifts that is given to the Lord’s bondmen. It is common to them all. . . . There is always something to be happy about if we look for it. —Amy Carmichael. 17. Joy with Singing “The Lord is my strength and song” (Ex. 15:2). I think He consecrated song, for us, and made it a sweet and sacred thing forever, when He Himself “sang an hymn,” the very last thing before He went forth to consecrate suffering for us. . . . “The Lord thy God . . . will joy over thee with singing.” And the time is coming when He will not only sing “for thee” or “over thee,” but with thee. He says He will!—F. R. H. 18. The Little Place “For who hath despised the day of small things?” (Zech. 4:10). “Father, where shall I work today?” And my love flowed warm and free. Then He pointed me out a tiny spot, And said, “Tend that for Me.” I answered quickly, “Oh, no, not that. Why, no one would ever see, No matter how well my work was done. Not that little place for me.” And the word He spoke, it was not stern; He answered me tenderly,
II. Clouds of 'Rebellion “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you” (Isa. 59:2). The lightest cloud before the sun will prevent it from focusing its rays to a burning point on the convex glass. And the small, thin, fleeting, scarcely visible acts of self-will that sometimes pass across our skies will prevent our feeling the warmth of Christ’s love upon our shrouded hearts. Every piece of known r e b e l l i o n against Christ will shatter all true enjoyment of His favor. . . . The con dition of knowing and feeling the warmth and blessedness of Christ’s love to me is the honest submission of my nature to His commandments. —Maclaren. 12. The Neglected Word “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord . . .?” (Heb. 2:3). The following lines, the unconscious reproach of a child, describe a neglect which, if continued, would have ter rible results: “Mother, I’ve found an old dusty thing, High on the shelf—just look!” “Why, that’s a Bible, Tommy, dear, Be careful—that’s God’s Book!” “ God’s Book!” the child exclaimed. “Then, Mother, before we lose it We’d better send it back to God, For you know, we never (use it.” —Selected. 13. On Guard “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation” (Matt. 26:41). When you say, “Lead us not into temptation," you must in good earnest mean to avoid in your daily conduct those temptations from which you have already suffered. When you say, “Deliver us from evil,” you must mean to struggle against that evil in your hearts which you are conscious of, and which you pray to be forgiven. . . . To w a t c h and pray are surely in our power, and by these means we are certain of getting strength. —J. H. Newman. Deliberate Prayer “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all persever ance and supplication for all saints” (Eph. 6:18). John Bradford, when asked his secret in prayer, said: “When I know what I want, I always stop on that prayer until I feel that I have pleaded it with God, and until God and I have had dealings with each other upon it.” Get the first mercy, and then go again 14.
