moments from time to time. No more can we expect to know God in a real way, unless we are willing to make time for prayer and for the reading of His Word. “Take time to be holy, Speak oft with thy Lord.” —W. D. Longstaff. 23. Dynamite of Prayer “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (Jas. 5:16). ... God gives to His children the dyna mite of prayer, a power so unlimited that He says simply. “Ask, and it, shall be given you.” Are we handling this dynamite carefully, or are we ignoring it, or are we ignorant of it? Do we fully realize that through prayer we can send the gospel to the lost who today in some parts’ of the world face death every moment? —Europe's Millions. 24. The Sunset “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work” (John 9:4). The sunset burns across the sky; Upon the air its warning cry The curfew tolls, from tower to tower; O children, ’tis the last, last hour! The work that centuries might have done Must crowd the hour of setting sun; And through all lands the saving name Ye must in fervent haste proclaim. —D. M. Panton. 25. The Holy Spirit and the Word “Be filled with the Spirit” (Eph. 5:18). “Study to show thyself approved unto God . . . rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15). Scripture without the present work of the Spirit of- God will be misused, so that there will be a dead orthodoxy or a proud arguing. The Holy Spirit, on the other hand, never works in a way that ignores the Scripture, so that all claim to His leading which sets aside their authority, meaning, and power, is both false and dangerous. May we experience, with the precious harmony of lowly gratitude, the Holy Spirit and the Scriptures which He has caused to be written. —Percy W. Heward. 26. Beautiful Obscurity “If there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Phil. 4:8). When Alexander’s painter brought the portrait of the conqueror to him, he was charmed to see that it was painted with his hand resting on his

“Ah, little one, search that heart of : thine. Art thou working for them or Me?” i —Selected. 19. Softness “Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God” (Psa. 143:10). A despicable Indulgence in lying in bed gave me such a view of the soft ness of my character, that I resolved, on my knees, to live a life of more self-denial; the tone and vigor of my mind rose rapidly: all those duties from which I usually shrink seemed recreations. . . . Whenever I can say, “Teach me to do thy will,” it Is like throwing ballast out of an air-balloon; my soul ascends immediately, and light and happiness shine around me. —Henry Martyri. 20. God's Thought “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!!’ (Psa. 139:17). Look for God’s thought in all the incidents and objects of your daily life. f)o not stop at the outward; pene trate to the inward and eternal. Be neath that bitter physical suffering there are stores of divine fortitude and grace. Beneath that trying dispensa tion there are celestial compensa tions. Beneath those sweet family ties there are suggestions of love and friendship which can never grow old or pass away.-—F. B. Meyer. 21. None Drafted “Here am I; send me” (Isa. 6:8). There are no drafted soldiers in God’s army. Every servant is a volun teer. God will call; He will convict of sin. He will cleanse and purge the sinner from his guilt. He will do all that we cannot do—but He forces no one to serve Him. . . . The Child of God who has been made a clean vessel for service will be constrained to live for Christ because he loves Him. —Henry Grube. 22. Blessed Communion “Truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ” (1 John 1:3). A sense of the presence of God re quires communion. You cannot know a person very well whom you see but at infrequent .intervals and with whom you spend only a few hasty
