JUNE 2025 7

I ’ve long toyed whether street rodding is a hobby or a sport. I’ve written editorials about the subject and enthusiasts seem to be split on how they refer to their passion. I’ve always leaned toward using hobby to describe what we do based on the entertainment aspect of street rodding, but lately I’m leaning toward sport. In my past thinking there were no rules but upon further thought, and while preparing this month’s issue, I realized we do have rules—the Rules of the Road. Traveling hundreds of thousands of miles for over a half century, in some cases using parts older than that, and doing it safely is certainly the goal of our sport as evidenced in this month’s Street is Neat. Driving safe, keeping your car in great condition and experi- encing how to drive in all conditions are all tools in our sport. At times today’s urban traffic seems like we are all driving on a racetrack. Speaking of driving on a racetrack, NSRA Autocross is your chance to learn the rules of our sport. NSRA has long offered free Safety Inspections, but now NSRA Autocross offers another way we can all remain safe out on the road. How many of you are comfortable with, or even know how, your car will react in emer- gency braking, sudden swerves, or acceleration to avoid accidents? Maybe your impression of autocross is excess speed and of course as in all things, who’s fastest. It’s an adrenaline pumping sport for all, but those chasing speed are in another league. NSRA Autocross is set to change enthusiasts’ impression of autocross and offer our participants the chance to learn how to react in the real-world situations of our sport. Learning how to handle your car can only be done on the track so we hope you’ll take the opportunity to come out and play. A case in point happened several days before shipping this issue as our intrepid staffer, Louie Mayall, fired up his ’33 Ford sedan for a cool 100-mile cruise to the 48th Western Street Rod Nationals in Bakersfield, California, (for the full history of Louie’s ’33 check out page 60). As he cruised up and around the rolling grasslands, he was nearing the town of McKittrick just outside Bakersfield when crossing a small bridge he was Rules of the Road

suddenly jolted by a quick hop followed by scraping sounds. As the right-rear wheel and tire passed him up out the side window, he realized his wheel and tire had exited the vehicle. After a skillful effort wrestling the ’33 to the side of the road he discovered the rear axle had snapped in half right next to the rear axle bearing. The miss- ing brake drum went with the rim and tire and that meant his brakes had little affect while try- ing to stop. Luckily, no one was hurt, and he got the sedan towed back to his house. The damage isn’t as bad as Louie first thought but aside from the mechanical fix, he’ll probably need a rear fender, bumper and paint. Remember, we said Louie was intrepid, so he jumped in his ’33 Ford roadster and headed back to ‘Oil City’ and all the action set to happen at the Kern County Fairgrounds. In a tribute to Murphy’s Law, the roadster’s top latch broke while putting it on, but there was only a slight chance of drizzle, so he headed out without a top and it rained on and off all day Saturday. Another rule all street rod- ders live by is finding shelter for our cars when the weather turns foul, so Louie parked under barns and overhangs and the roadster fared well. All in all, Louie will have a great story to be exaggerated and told for years and he hasn’t even dealt with the insurance company yet. As you enjoy your street rodding sport be sure to follow the Rules of the Road.—ED Tom Vogele tomvogele@verizon.net

Coincidence? Dear Tom,

named it “Two Dicks Garage.” Most of the kids at my high school had to walk or take the bus, but some had cars they let us work on. We chopped the top on my ’33 sedan 5 1/2 inches (a little too much), channeled it 11 inches and removed the hood and front and rear fenders. Now the kids were looking at us, so we got a little more work from them, but very few could pay so it just became a place for everybody to congregate. We built a ’30 A roadster with a Buick grille, ’40 Chevy front and rear fenders, a Buick hood, and a ’32 flathead engine, tranny and rearend. Then a ’36 Plymouth coupe, which was a five-window. After chopping the top we couldn’t get it to fit, so it became a three-window. Didn’t look too bad! Then a ’36 Ford five-window coupe, which remained a five-window, but this time during the top chop we used a lot of cuts across the top and parts from another five-window. When finished it looked like someone had stepped on it—not too good!

I’ve been reading “Write of Way” for many years and like that it shows the course of our sport— great letters! I’m 90 years old and have been play- ing with cars since age 11 when I purchased a ’33 Ford two-door sedan. It didn’t run, but the owner of a car lot I worked at helped me get it running good enough for the five-mile trip home. I paid for the ‘33 washing cars and weeding at the car lot and it took three months of part time work to pay it off, but I really wanted that car! Once home my dad said he didn’t think it would run long enough to get it to the dump, so he let me keep it! I worked on it until high school, and not only did it get me around, but I was also the only kid (prior to high school) that had a car! I had decided a hot rod it would become and another lost soul, a buddy of mine named Dick (my name also) and I started a shop in a rented two car garage and

By then we were 17 and looking for girls and I ended up getting married to a beautiful girl. Eventually she said, “You’re married, you need to sell the hot rod and settle down.” So, I sold the ’33 but luckily a couple years later I convinced her that I needed that car back, so I found it and bought it back. All I got was the body, frame and rearend— and it looked worse than when I first got it! Over the years I worked on it a little at a time and a friend of mine put a new firewall and floor in it for me. My son built a new frame and engine and in the ‘80s I started driving it more often. This year on my “Bucket List” I’m trying to go to as many car shows as possible. Besides local shows I’m trying to hit the NSRA events in Bakersfield, CA, Springfield, MO, and Pueblo, CO. I’m happy as heck to be able to say I am still driving the ’33 every time I get a chance. With me at 90, my son has his eye on the car. He has a ’32 highboy roadster with a blown 383 in it—too fast for me! His two sons have already figured out which one gets which. I’ve been a member of NSRA for a long time and always read your editori- al first. Keep up the good work, there is a lot of fun out there still to be had—stirring the minds of the young and waking up the old! Hope to see you at an event this year!

Sincerely, Rich Galarneay Tijeras, New Mexico

Rich, It was only when we were finalizing this issue that I realized your letter fit this month’s Street is Neat section so perfectly. Not only because your street rod is the same year/model as Joe Mayall’s on page 60, but also because it showcases decades of ownership, pride and enjoyment and that’s something very special. At 74 I’m currently working on a chopped ’71 C10 I’ve owned for over 50 years and installing an 8-71 supercharged 560ci engine to help propel me into the future.—ED

NSRA Autocross 2025 Sponsor Spotlight

By Kevin Webb NSRA Autocross Director

G ateway Classic Cars, based in O’Fallon, Illinois, has grown from a converted depart- ment store outside St Louis, Missouri, to 20 locations nationwide, making them the largest classic vehicle retailer in the United States. In this month’s NSRA Autocross Sponsor Spotlight we put the brakes on Ken Dusman, Director of Marketing, to get Gateway’s take on the classic car marketplace. NSRA: Ken, how many vehicles does Gateway Classis Cars keep in stock? Ken: With our 20 stores, we average around 3,400 vehicles of all types. Our inventory constantly changes with an average of 70 to 100 new addi- tions each week and we only except “turnkey” mod- els and focus on premium quality. We do not accept project vehicles, or those we find with obvious defects such as rust. NSRA: How can I find a vehicle that’s right for me? Ken: Our online search engine can provide inven- tory across all our stores, and we can arrange ship- ping to any state. Eighty percent of our sales are to out-of-state or international buyers. Every vehicle has both a video and over 100 photos, plus a full description of the vehicle included, and you can search by year, model or make, then sort by multiple factors to find the right ride for you. Our sales staff at each store are fully trained to help you find your dream car. NSRA: Let’s talk about that for a minute, do you have a lot of people searching for their first clas- sic car experience? Ken: Yes, many times people will reach out to us because they remember a particular vehicle a parent or family member once had. Every person’s experi-

ence is different, but our job is to help find their dream car. NSRA: Are pre-purchase inspections available? Ken: Yes, we do work with independent inspec- tors that can provide a complete report on the vehi- cle’s condition. NSRA: Is financing available? Ken: Yes, we have several lenders who specialize in the classic vehicle market. NSRA: Can I get an extended service policy on a classic vehicle? Ken: Yes, we will begin offering service contracts on select vehicles in June 2025. NSRA: Why the interest in NSRA Autocross? Ken: We have found many of our buyers are look- ing for a “track ready” type of vehicle they can have fun with right away. Not many are looking for long- term, drawn-out project vehicles. NSRA: What if I need to sell a vehicle, how does that work? Ken: Customers can contact any of our 20 show- rooms and we will set up an appointment with you to have our inventory specialist review your vehicle and make recommendations to get your best possi- ble price. Ideally, you’ll want to bring the vehicle to the showroom. Remember, the car must be roadwor- thy and safe, with no visible defects, and we’ll need a copy of the title to list the vehicle. All vehicles are researched to obtain best possible market evalua- tions for that model. After the consignment is accept- ed that full set of professionally done photos, video and vehicle information are listed on our massive website as well as all the top tier automotive sites for maximum exposure. Our global reach helps find the right buyer from anywhere in the world. NSRA: In selling classic vehicles, what country surprised you the most, based on the amount of cars they buy from Gateway Classic Cars? Ken: Australia hands down, they love our American classics! We’ve found our buyers are as diverse and unique as the classics we sell. Don’t for- get, all our showrooms host a Caffeine & Chrome event the last Saturday of every month. Check out our Facebook posts for details. gatewayclassiccars.com.

The opinions expressed herein do not necessarily reflect those of the National Street Rod Association and/or StreetScene Magazine. Engine Management Advanced Tuning

By Greg Banish

A s tools for tuning mod- ern engines have become more powerful and sophisticated in recent years, the need for in-depth knowledge of engine man- agement systems and tun- ing techniques has grown. Tuning engines can be a mysterious art, all engines need a precise balance of fuel, air, and timing in order to reach their true performance potential. This book explains how the EFI system determines engine operation and how the calibrator can change the controlling parameters to optimize actual engine performance. “Engine Management Advanced Tuning” takes engine-tuning tech- niques to the next level. It is a must-have for tuners and calibra- tors and a valuable resource for anyone who wants to make horsepower with a fuel-injected, electronically controlled engine. Author Greg Banish is a cali- bration engineer with extensive aftermarket performance calibra- tion experience. He has a BSME from GMI Engineering and Management Institute (Kettering University). With over a thou- sand unique calibrations per- formed over five years, he has worked with enthusiasts and OEMs alike to improve the per- formance and driving behavior of a wide range of vehicles.

The book contains detailed equations, graphs, and illustra- tions. Also included are valuable and practical examples, includ- ing real-world examples based upon the author’s experience that will help more advanced readers apply this new informa- tion to situations that are com- monly seen during calibration. The 8 1/2 x 11-inch, 128-page soft bound book features 250 color photos.

32 JUNE 2025

By Louie Mayall

THE READIO ‘34 FORD SEDAN T he National Street Rod Association has been

telling everyone “Street is Neat” since the earliest ‘70s and although almost everything has changed compared to the first Street Rod Nationals in Peoria, one thing hasn’t changed. Getting out and driving your street rod is the best way to cruise your local town or all over the USA. Often, I have people come up to me at an event and ask why they didn’t see this or that rod/rodder featured in StreetScene. Sometimes the rod mentioned was a car I knew because the person has been rodding since the beginning and surprisingly, I had shot a number of these recommendations over the years (rods like Tom Vollbrecht’s black ’34 Pontiac sedan and David

Laney’s ’39 Chevy coupe). What surprised me was how many of the cars people brought up that I had only thought about photographing, but had not actually shot yet. So I acted, and this month we’d like to share the history of three such street rods: Skip Readio’s ’34 Ford sedan, Mike Chrispyn’s ’32 Ford coupe and Joe Mayall’s ’33 Ford sedan. These three cars have tons in common, and just about nothing in common depending on how you look at it. Two of the cars look almost like they did in the ‘70s and one has had more distinct looks and facelifts than a super model. Skip’s car is a tribute to its early ‘70s look and hasn’t changed in feel since Smiley’s paint job in 1972. The Mayall sedan has the same paint scheme it’s had since Joe bought the rod in 1973, but just about everything else has changed over the years. Mike’s ’32 started out as a chopped and channeled lowboy in white. All three rods have been through multiple front and rear suspensions, multiple powertrains and multiple interiors over the years, but with close to 150 years of ownership and over 400,000 miles driven combined, these cars represent three great families with a lot of street rodding history. The whole idea behind featuring some of the rods that have been around longer than many of us for me started with Skip Readio. I loved the eye-grabbing paint on Skip’s ’34 from the moment my child eyes saw the wild artwork. I

never did forget the rod and have seen it year after year over the last 50 years at the Street Rod Nationals and events all over the East Coast. Skip’s journey with the ’34 began when he was a scrub looking out the passenger window of his buddy’s ride when he saw the ’34 sedan highboy sitting off to the side with a Hemi mocked into place. It took Skip a week and $125 to get the ’34 out of the previous owner’s hands and onto a ’52 International flatbed that delivered it to his childhood home. The original Hemi had problems and was not part of the sale, but it included a ’39 Ford drivetrain, ’47 Mercury front end, ’34 steering, steelies and lots of other parts. Skip pilfered the Hemi from a ’52 Chrysler Saratoga, bought a used radiator and grille from an antiques dealer, slipped on a little lighting, threw on some primer and hit the road.

34 JUNE 2025

That was the summer of 1964, but as soon as snow was coming the Hemi was pulled and built for performance with a Crower Solid Imperial Cam, M/T high compression pistons, and the four- barrel intake from a ’54 New Yorker topped with an OEM Stromberg carb. It was love at first firing. The rebuilt engine was in and running great before the snow melted, but it was still mated to the ’39 Ford drivetrain.

Unfortunately, the ’39 trans wouldn’t hold second gear without a hand on the shifter, the rear was starting to quickly show its age, and Skip was a young man with a Hemi. Later that year Skip ripped back into the ’34 in his backyard “shop.” The tree made a great engine hoist, the frame was squared up in the dirt, and the neighbor was kind enough to let his friend Waly plug in the welder behind her stove. Skip found a great deal on a T10 with an adapter, a ’63 Mopar 8 3/4 rear was sourced, the rod tore down, and the rear was installed on the Ford transverse leaf spring with reversed traction bars. The frame was completely boxed, fish plated to stiffen up the chassis extension and given a quick coat of paint. The body was slipped on and then coated with multiple coats of black lacquer. A hole saw was employed on the completely smoothed over dash to mount an array of Stewart Warner gauges that were upgraded to SW Greenline gauges. Skip slipped in a ’55 DeSoto Wonder Bar radio to enjoy the tunes, ground out the intake to fit a Carter AFB carb, and finally got to enjoy riding in the now respectable hot rod for a couple of months until the accident!

to the Future” graphic starts with a Laurel and Hardy scene from the movie “Way Out West” and a bust of WC Fields to signify 1934, a scene of Japan under a mushroom cloud honors 1945 the year of Skip’s birth, a guy cruising the waves and a couple enjoying the sunset represents the modern times circa 1971, and a rendition of John Pitre’s artwork “Over Population” consumes the rear and makes grim predictions about the future. The inside of the white graphics has what Skip calls spider webbing, but I think the paint splatters were in modern art of the time. That theme follows over to the dash. The beltline is Kandy Tangerine over the white from the graphics with air brushed details. The rod then proceeded to wow friends and strangers at the inaugural Springfield Civic Center Car Show.

In 1966 the car was in an accident and after a long court battle Skip got his insurance payout and the car was one step closer to the rod you see here. The accident damaged the right front, but it was eventually ready to roll, now in red oxide primer. Life stepped in with an injury and then college, but in 1971 Skip got a great deal on a Dana 60 out of a ’68 GTX and the rearend was mounted on ’63 Ramcharger parallel main leafs with ’68 GTX leaf stacks. The now iconic paint scheme came in late 1972 when the red oxide four-door went to Smiley’s Auto Body. Smiley had just opened the shop and was super excited to make a statement piece. A few late-night sessions and they had decided on the “ribbon- through-time” theme below the beltline over Caddy FireMist Red with Kandy Tangerine on top. The “1934
