and on the cross. The thought o f the com ing agony had already taken possession of the Lord and He was sore pressed in con templation o f that coming baptism, and there was a great longing that it might be endured and over. Verse 51 means that while He was the Prince o f Peace, and while the ultimate result o f His coming would be the establishment, o f universal jjeace, that the truth He taught would divide men, as in fact we know it did historically, and would thus cause division not merely in Society in general, but even in the home between those who accept the truth that He proclaimed, and especially Him who was the truth, and those who reject the truth that He proclaimed, and ¿specially reject Him. The closest and dearest o f earthly relationships would be sundered because o f the bitter conflict that would be engendered on the part o f those who'reject Him against those who accept Him. ----------O---------- Criminal business ,is 75 per cent, less since the State went dry, the first o f the year, as compared with criminal business from January 1, 1915, to the end o f the month o f February, according to Judge D. T. Mil ler, justice o f the peace o f Boise precinct, who made a comparison o f his books to ascertain if crimes were more numerous under prohibition or under the legal sale o f liquor. Judge Miller’s docket since the first o f the year has been very light.— Evening Capital News, Boise, Idaho. -------- -0— ----- .“ Poverty is the principal cause, direct and indirect, o f prostitution,” says the Senate Vice Committee o f Illinois. Their 978-page report says that “thousands of girls are driven into prostitution because of the sheer inability to keep body and soul together on the low wages received by them.” Here then is something for us to think about. It is the grafting, greedy, money-loving and pleasure-loving rich who underpay these laboring girls whom God will hold responsible for much o f the sin o f our times.
sion. Very ingenious and cunning attempts have been made to try to make the expres sion mean something else, but all these attempts fail utterly. This expression is used twelve times in one book in the Bible, the last book in the Bible. Eight times it is used o f the duration o f the existence and glory o f God. Once it is used o f the dura tion o f the blessedness o f the righteous. In every other instance it is used o f the doom o f the beast, the false prophet, the devil, and -the finally impenitent. Every attempt ot_ make the Bible teach anything else than the endless conscious suffering o f those who persistently reject Christ has failed utterly when the Scriptures are closely examined to-find out just what they teach. The the ory o f the ultimate annihilation o f the wicked, and the theory o f the unconscious existence of the wicked, all break down when one comes to the Bible to find out what it teaches. The only alternative is either to give up the Bible and its author ity or else give up the hope that any who persistently reject Christ in the life that now is will escape endless conscious suf fering hereafter. But if we give up the Bible we must give up the great truth that “ God is love,” for it is entirely to the authority o f the Bible that we owe an intel ligent faith in the doctrine that God is love. And if we do thus give up this doctrine we certainly have no basis left upon which to found a hope o f the future salvation o f any one. W e must also give up our faith in a crucified and risen Christ; we must give up any' assured confidence o f life after death ; we must give up every precious hope we hold. What is the meaning of the. following verses of 'Scripture: Luke 12 : 49 ; 12 : 50 ; >12:51? Verse 49 means that a result o f our Lord’s coming, a result that He Himself recognized, would be that the preaching of the truth by Him would kindle a fire of contention between those who accept the truth and those who deny it. Verse 50 refers to the baptism o f suffering through which the Lord was to pass in Gethsemane
