The threefold secret o f keeping oneself in the love o f God is set forth in these texts as follow s: I. By “ building up yourselves on your most holy faith” This means by the study o f the W ord o f God and its teachings (Acts 17:11; 20:32; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17). II. By "praying in the Holy Spirit.” This means that definite, earnest prayer must have a prominent place in our lives (cf. Matthew 26:41; Luke 18:1; Romans 8:26). III. By "looking for the Mercy o f our Lord Jesus Christ.” That is to say, one keeps himself in the love o f God when his eye is focused on the coming again o f our Lord Jesus Christ. Theme: Exhortation to holiness. T ext : 1 Peter 1:13-16. I. Note the twofold injunction of these verses: 1. Hope to the' end. 2. Be ye holy. II. How lhis injunction may be obeyed: 1. By girding up the loins. This means disentanglement from worldly objects. 2. By being sober. Indicating control o f the fleshly appetites. 3. “ Not fashioning themselves accord­ ing to the former desires.” W e must constantly keep Christ, and not the world, before us as our model.

Its necessity lay in the needy multi­ tudes below. 2. It was necessary because o f Cal- . vary. Theme: The vocation of Christian dis- cipleship— To witness. T e x t : Acts 1:8; 5:32. I. A witness—whatf 1 Not a mere spectator or admirer. 2. One who has a testimony to give. 3. One who endures physical suffer­ ing for his cause. II. O f what we are to witness. Four facts (vv. 30, 31). 1. O f the cross—The death o f Christ and for what it stands. 2. The resurrection o f Christ—The seal o f the Father. 3. The exaltation—Acceptance by the Father o f Christ’s work. 4. The descent o f the Holy Spirit—A sign to the Church o f the acceptance o f Christ’s work. III. How we are to witness. 1. By having an experimental knowl­ edge o f the things we testify to. 2. By every day life and convefsation. 3. With the lips and tongue. IV. How to fulfill this function. 1.
