Doctrinal Teachings of the 17 th Chapter. It will be o f interest to note the doctri­ nal teachings o f this chapter which-may be summarized somewhat as follow s: I. God. 1. What "He, is. His nature—divine (v. 1), omnipo­ tent (v. 2), omnipresent (v. 23), righteous ( v: 25). His name—Father (vv. 1, 5, 21, 24), only true God (v. 3), Holy Father (v. 11), righteous Father (v. 25). 2. What He does With respect to Christ: Loved Him before the foundation o f the world (v. 24), sends Him to the world (vv. 3, 8, 18, 21, 23, 25), dwells in Him (v. 23), gives Him all power (v. 2), gives believers to Him (vv. 3, 6, 8, etc.), glorifies Him (vv. 22, 24), With respect to believers: Gives them to Christ (vv. 3, 6, 8, etc.), loves them as He loves Christ (vv. 23, 26), dwells in them (Vv. 23, 26), keeps them (vv. 11, 12, 15), sanctifies them (v. 17), makes them one with Himself (vv. 7, 21), gives them eternal life by knowing Him (v. 3). His nature—divine—Son (v. 1), omnipo­ tent (v. 2 ), omnipresent (v. 23)., equal with God (vv. 3, 10, 11, 12, 21), pre-existent (vv. 5, 24) ; human—with human body (v. 1), a man (vy. 1, 4, 11, 12), dependent upon the Father (w . 7, 8). _ His names—Jesus (v. 1), Son (v. 1), Christ (v. 3). 2. What He does. With respect to God: - Glorifies God (vv. 1, 3), reveals God (vv. 6, 26), knows God intimately (v. 25), delivers God’s W ord (vv. 8, 14), finishes the work God gave Him to do (v. 4), £ They are His (v. 10), gives eternal life to them (v. 2), manifests God to them (vv. 6, 25, 26), prays for them (vv. 9, 20), dwells in them (vv. 21, 23), keeps them II. Jesus Christ. 1. What He is. speaks God’s words (v. 8), With respect to believers:

(v. 12), intercedes for them (vv. 8, 9), sanctifies Himself as their example (v. 19), longs for them in glory (v. 24). III. The believer. 1. His relationship to God. Belohgs to God (vv. 6, 8, 9, 10, 24), indwelt by God (vv. 23, 26), kept by God (vv. 11, 12, 15), knows God (vv. 3, 25), receives His Word (v. 8), keeps His word (v. 6), loved by God (vv. 23, 2 6 ),'God glorified in them (v. 10). 2. His relationship to Christ. Given to Christ by God (vv. 2, 6, 8, etc.), is His (vv. 9, 10), knows Christ (v. 3), recognizes the divine origin o f Christ (v. 8 ) , recognizes the divine origin o f His teaching (v. 7), one with Christ (vv. 21, 22), shares in His glory (v. 22), object o f His prayer (vv. 9, 17), kept by His power (v. 15), must follo-sy His example in sancti­ fication ( y . 19), has same errand as Christ (v. 18), will be with Him in glory (v. 24), In, not o f (vv. 11, 14, 15, 16), hated by (v, 14), must preach to (vv. 20, 21), should be victorious over (v. 15), should show unity before (vv. 21, 23), should seek to lead the world 1:0 Christ through testi­ mony (v. 23). 4. His relationship to other believers. Love them with the same love as Christ (v. 26), be one with them (vv. 11, 2i, 22). IV. The world. Knows not the Father (v. 25), hates Christ (v.,14), hates believers (v. 14), not included in Christ’s intercessory prayer (v. 9 ) , Christ came to save it (v , 18), believers sent to lead it to God (v. 18), will be led to believe in Jesus Christ as the God-sent Saviour by the disciples’ testimony (vv. 20, 21), will believe when believers are united (vv. 21, 23). V. Prayer. Posture (v. 1) ; object —God’s glory and the salvation o f men; nature—intercessory, unselfish, prophetic; subjects—Christ (v. 1), the apostles (v. 9), disciples o f all ages (v. 20), not for the world (v. 9). VI. The W-ord of God. Spoken by Christ (v. 8), given to the one with Christ (vv. 21, 22), ' 3. His relationship to the world.
