EXPOSITION AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

v. 21. “I speak as concerning reproach (by way o f disparagement), as though we had been weak. Howbeit (Yet) whereinso ever any is bold (omit,) I speak foolishly (in f oolishness) (add ,) l am bold also (so am I)." In verse 20 Paul protests against ecclesiastical tyrannyTand in this verse says that he speaks by way o f disparagement, that is disparagement o f himself, as though he had been weak. It might appear that he had been weak as he did not display the tyranny that his opponents did, and it is very likely that these ecclesiastical tyrants who opposed him had insinuated that Paul was weak in his not lording it over the church in a way similar to that which they employed. Paul tells them that so far from being weak he had as much to boast o f as any o f them, and therefore could be as bold as they. In the verses that follow he cites some o f the things o f which he had to boast:

vs. 22, 23. “Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I. (23) Are they ministers of Christ? I speak as a fool (one beside himself), I am (omit, am) more; in labors more abundant (abundantly), in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent (in prisons more abundantly, in stripes above measure), in deaths o ft” Here Paul tells us some o f the things o f which he had to boast as well as they, or even more than they. They could say that they were Hebrews, so could h e; that they were Israelites, so could he; that they were the seed o f Abraham, so could he (cf. Phil. 3 :4-6). When they put forward their claim that they were ministers o f Christ he could say that he was more than that, not only a servant o f Christ, but that his labors had been more abundant than theirs as a ser vant o f Christ. Furthermore, he had been
