THE KING’S BUSINESS

Monday, September 30 . Acts 2 : 5 - 11 .

fire rested upoij the women as well as upon the men (cf. vs. 17, 18). The blessing was not to the church as a body, as it is rep resented by a certain school o f thought, but to “each one o f them” (R . V .) as indi viduals. “ They were all filled with the Holy Ghost.” This is a fulfillment o f ch. 1 : 5 , so that the three expressions, “ filled with the Spirit,” and “baptized with (more exactly, in) the Spirit,” and “ the promise o f the Father,” are practically synonomous. The expression here used, “ filled with the Spirit” brings out the thought that the Holy Spirit takes complete possession of the faculties o f the person who is baptized in the Spirit. The immediate result was that they “began to speak with other tongues” (cf. ch. 10:46; 19:6). -While the baptism in the Spirit manifested itself in this way on this occasion, it did not always manifest itself in this particular gift,' but it always did manifest itself in some new power for Christ (1 Cor. 12:6-10, 30; ch. 4:31; 9:17-22). Speaking with tongues is not the most, but the least, important o f the results o f the baptism in the Spirit (1 Cor. 14:2-19). As it was a showy gift it Was apparently particularly coveted in the church in Corinth, and so it is particularly coveted in some circles today. But the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul has warned us very definitely concerning this error, and the danger o f it in 1 Cor. 14. Being thus filled with the Holy Spirit the disciples spoke not in their own wisdom but “as the Spirit gave them utterance.” So ought we to speak and so may we speak.

The noise o f the wind from heaven was heard by the multitude without (v. 6 , R. V .). They rushed together to find out what it meant. The multitudes always gather when the Spirit comes upon God’s people. The disciples seized the opportun ity o f the gathered multitude and began to speak, not o f the blessings they .had received, ,nor o f themselves, but o f “the mighty works o f God” (v. 11). Each one heard them speaking in his own language (vs. 8 , 11). This was evidently an entirely different gift o f tongues from that that so many are claiming today, where no one understands what is said and no one is benefited by it. There was no need o f any interpreters, for each one heard them speak ing in the language wherein he was born. St. John’s Rectory, Victoria, Australia: “I value the paper more than I can tell you.- We have nothing approaching it in Aus tralia. It is indeed such a great privilege to get once more the sane, sound, spiritual Bible teaching of Dr. Torrey. Some of us here in Victoria have sweet and sacred memories of his visit and work among us thirteen years ago, and he has been re membered on our prayer list from that time till this. You ask for suggestions regarding T he K ing ’ s B usiness : Do not leave any thing out —it is all so good.” --------- O----------
