STRONGER THAN EVER Why I Decided to Find My Greatest Strengths
If you’ve been reading this newsletter for a while, then you already know I’m obsessed with becoming the best I can be. September is Self- Improvement Month, and I’ve recently been on a journey to learn more about my strengths as an individual and an entrepreneur. It all started with some simple tools found on the internet. One of them was CliftonStrengths by Gallup Polls. Those who follow the news have probably heard of Gallup. The organization polls Americans on political preferences, opinions, and habits. Considering their credentials, I was particularly interested in trying their test and viewing my results. (You can check it out for yourself at Store.Gallup.com.)
part of my identity. It certainly rings true, as did my other strengths: Focused, Learner, Analytical, and Competition. Now, you might ask yourself why your strengths matter so much. You’re already good at them! Shouldn’t you be focusing on your weaknesses instead? It’s a fair question, and this type of self-improvement requires a shift in mindset. It’s accepting yourself for who you are as well as reminding yourself that when you’re naturally good at things, you should use them to your and other people’s advantage. I was so impressed with CliftonStrengths that I had my staff complete the same exercise. After all, if I know my employee’s strengths, I can find ways to use them. We all have things we enjoy and don’t enjoy doing, things we do well and don’t. If I can have my people focus as much of their time as possible on the things they like, they will be happier and create better work. Productivity will increase, and that will benefit the company.
economic value. Some people are Conductors, and their primary strength is building strong teams that can accomplish goals. Experts are focused on building processes and driving improvement. I’m a Rainmaker, which means I’m confident in my ability to do well and have excellent promotional and persuasion skills that inspire others. I think that’s accurate, as was their assessment that my family member falls into the category of Expert. Of course, understanding your strengths is only half the battle. Once you know your strengths, you have to harness them and put them to good use. I’ve hired a strengths coach to help me do exactly that, but there’s also a lot of work that you can do on your own. So much self-help advice focuses on where we fall short. We can all try to improve in every area of our lives, but focusing instead on what we’re best at is a refreshing change, and it’s more likely to produce results. I’ve already seen some of them myself. No one does everything well. But the things we excel at are our greatest assets.
The program found that my top strength is Achiever. In other words, I’m constantly
motivated to accomplish something new. If I can’t or don’t, I end up dissatisfied and antsy. Achieving things also makes me feel better about myself and is a big
I did an additional Gallup survey called Builder Profile. This one focuses on business leaders and how we excel at building things of

LIFE CAN BE UNPREDICTABLE PRESERVING THE BALANCE OF WORK AND FAMILY LIFE
WHEN CAN I USE FMLA LEAVE? An eligible employee can be granted up to 12 workweeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period for the following reason(s):
Workers shouldn’t have to choose between the job they need and the family members they love. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was created to allow employees to take reasonable unpaid leave for a particular family or medical reason so they can maintain a work/life balance. WHAT DOES IT PROVIDE? The FMLA provides eligible employees up to 12 workweeks of unpaid leave a year with the requirement of group health benefits to be maintained during the leave as if employees were continuing to work. They are also entitled to resume their same or equivalent job at the end of their FMLA leave. WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR FMLA? FMLA applies to all public agencies, all public and private elementary and secondary schools, and companies with 50 or more employees. Employees can be eligible for FMLA if they have worked for their employer for at least 12 months, worked at least 1,250 hours over the past 12 months, and work at a location that employs 50 or more employees within 75 miles.

Birth of and/or bonding with a newborn child The placement of a child for adoption or foster care with the employee To care for an immediate family member with a serious condition (child, spouse, or parent, but does not include parent in-laws) To take medical leave when the employee is unable to work due to a serious health condition For qualifying exigencies arising out of the fact that the employee’s spouse, child, or parent is on covered active duty or call to covered active- duty status as a member of the National Guard, Reserves, or Regular Armed Forces

The FMLA exists so employees can tend to their families without worrying about their job, allowing them to provide the best care for their loved ones. For more information regarding whether or not your company is eligible for FMLA, check out your local government agency for more details.

Our feet are incredibly important; we use them to stand, walk, run, and dance. So when they hurt, our entire lives can feel upended. Worse, we sometimes have no choice but to push through the pain to go about our daily lives. If you have a sharp, stabbing pain in your heels when you stand or walk, there’s a good chance you’re suffering from plantar fasciitis. It is one of the most common causes of heel pain and will affect about 10% of the population throughout their lives. But thankfully, proper treatment can reduce the pain or even eliminate it. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the base of the toes becomes inflamed. As a result, most sufferers experience sharp pain in the bottom of their feet, especially first thing in the morning. Typically, the symptoms will reduce as they walk and stand, but the process is painful. Further, they’re likely to experience a recurrence of the pain multiple times daily. Doctors don’t completely understand the causes of plantar fasciitis, but they have established risk factors. People who are overweight and over 40 are more likely to develop it. Exercise can also trigger the problem, especially if it involves intense or prolonged movement on your feet. Those who work on their feet all day are also at risk. Well-Heeled Understanding Plantar Fasciitis
Fortunately, a physical therapist can help diagnose and treat the condition. They will help you perform exercises to build up your strength and range of motion. Many are very simple, involving gentle stretches and movements you can perform at home. Sometimes the way you walk can also play a role in causing symptoms, so your physical therapist might recommend gait training to reduce symptoms and the likelihood of reinjury. Your physical therapist may also suggest routine changes to prevent the pain from returning, like regularly replacing your shoes, using a thick floor mat when standing for long periods, and warming up before exercising. But you won’t know the right way to treat your plantar fasciitis unless you reach out for help. Horizon Physical Therapy is well-versed in this condition and ready to get you back on your feet. The Insane Story of the 1904 Olympic Marathon
It’s Unbelievably True! The Craziest Olympic Marathon of 1904
In 1904, the year of America’s first Olympics, the men’s marathon was a bizarre spectacle to behold. In fact, it was likely the most jaw-dropping event ever in the history of the Olympic Games. On that hot, sweltering summer day in St. Louis, MO, only 14 of the 32 Olympic competitors crossed the finish line on what was deemed the most difficult course anyone was ever asked to undertake. Thomas Hicks, the American who actually came in first, received the slowest time of all of the Olympic marathons since 1896. But why was this one so tough?
mile course with seven hills was a bit much for competitors. Not to mention, support cars were churning up dust, leaving it behind for the runners to inhale, and they only had two water stations available before the halfway mark — and none in the second half! Even seasoned runners were not up to this crazy course! Three hours and 13 minutes after the marathon began, Fred Lorz, who had ridden a third of the course in a car, crossed the finish line. He was about to be adorned with a floral wreath when he confessed he had gotten so tired that he accepted a ride from one of the cars along the way, so he was disqualified.
Thomas Hicks, the true winner, was struggling with just 7 more miles to go. His fans on the sidelines provided him with a secret energy booster mix — a concoction containing strychnine (rat poison), brandy, and egg whites. By the time he crossed the finish line, he was hallucinating. And the fourth- place winner from Cuba wore dress pants and shoes for the entire race (because he lost his money gambling in New Orleans on his way to St. Louis and arrived after hitchhiking with nothing but the clothes on his back!). This 1904 Olympic marathon went down in history as the most bizarre and wildly entertaining race. Luckily, but surprisingly, nobody died!
With temperatures of roughly 104 degrees F and 90% humidity, a rigorous 24.85-
