A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9
Year 9 have had a very busy week with their first Duke of Edinburgh practice assessments. The feedback from the facilitators was glowing and I have to say I am really proud of their focus and respect during these sessions. We really hope that they found it an enjoyable and beneficial experience. We also have had a form time dedicated to ‘Spreading Kindness’. Students were given cards during Thursdays form time and asked to select two members of our school community who they wanted to share words of thanks. It was incredibly heartwarming to see our Year 9s take this task so seriously and there have been some lovely messages to teachers, form tutors and our wonderful support staff including canteen staff and caretakers. These will be sorted and delivered by our Kindness Ambassadors next week. We are excited the share the news that Daisy M has continued her winning streak, winning the gold medal in the Under 15 Hammer throw at the Middlesex County Championships on Sunday. This follows her performance the week before where she managed a new PB of 30.71m. Amazing work Daisy, keep it up! We also want to celebrate Florence P who has had some amazing experiences as part of the Sea Cadets. She is currently representing 14,000 sea cadets as a National Cadet Voice representative. In this role she has interviewed Royal Navy Officers applying for paid roles in the sea cadets and is meeting the Minister for Veterans and People. This shows what incredible opportunities there are for young people working with the cadets! Well done to the Rounders team who played against Richmond Upon Thames School on Thursday, which we won 14.5-3. See Sports Fixtures section for full write up. Epraise totals for this half term so far: 1st: 9EMU 2nd: 9PWA 3rd: 9SSR - have now taken the third spot! Keep up the fabulous work! We have had two very interesting assemblies this week. The first from a company called ‘Mothers against Muggings’ which was very impactful and informative for our students. The other on Friday was in response to Mental Health Awareness week. It was a brilliant opportunity for students to reflect on their own mental health and how they can better support themselves in times of stress or anxiety. We will be continuing with the theme of ‘Supporting our Mental Health’ in the coming weeks. Please make some time to speak to your child(ren) about this important topic at home.
MRS MORTIMER, HEAD OF YEAR 9
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘Things a Bright Girl Can Do’ by Sally Nicholls Set in the early twentieth century, this novel follows three brave young women as they all become involved in the Suffragette movement. I loved how Nicholls brought the time period to life, showing what it felt like to be a woman and girl during that turbulent time. But if historical novels aren’t usually your thing, don’t be put off. It feels really modern and fresh, exploring issues like class differences as the three main characters come from different backgrounds. There is also a beautiful love story between two of the characters. It has something for everyone!
