Exhibition Highlights Back for a thirteenth year, the Market Focus theatre , sponsored by Inphi, will once again form a hub of discussion, with more than 30 sessions covering everything from datacentres, photonics integrations and digital silicon photonics to fibre access, service and content provider optical transmission, Market Focus showcases the very latest news and developments from global leaders within the industry. This year we are pleased to announce the brand new ‘New Markets’ session on Wednesday morning with transportation sensing, lidar and 3d sensing all on the agenda. As new technologies continue to emerge, and increased pressure is being placed on the networks than ever, the need for efficient and resilient optical networks has never been greater, Market Focus gives you a unique opportunity to hear the latest trends, exciting predictions and the next steps to be taken to achieve connectivity goals. See p17-23 for the full timetable and session details. The FTTx Centre is the place for all things fibre. Featuring eleven zones supported by major vendors across the globe, each focusing on a specific area of fibre to the home. The central office zone will once again incorporate a live demonstration area, organised by CTTS, where the latest optical communications products will be showcased, see p26-27 for a full list of zone participants and demonstration timetable. In partnership with CTTS Training we’ll be sharing some of the key skills and techniques of fibre optic testing and fusion splicing. Refresh your learning and take part in these free training sessions on the show floor, including fusion splicing and fibre preparation tools. See p28 for full session details. Don’t forget to join the conversation across the three days of the exhibition, by following on social media for previews, product launches, photos and highlights. Beverley was a true pioneer for the ECOC event working on the exhibition from its infancy. Beverley has helped develop and grow the exhibition and has assisted the conference with how we combine the two, to create the event that is ECOC. We know that she valued all the clients at the event and even considered some exhibitors as her friends. We hope you will join us in remembering Beverley at the event this year.

touch screens, allowing the presenters to fully explain their work in an interactive forum. In addition we have organised a major public outreach event, primarily for secondary school students, featuring Professor Brian Cox discussing the origin and evolution of our solar system and the universe. In addition to its high-quality technical programme, ECOC is always renowned for an excellent social programme which allows the delegates to network and develop new ideas and projects in an environment that introduces them to the culture of the host country. For ECOC 2019 we will host the welcome reception in the Guinness Store House, the number one visitor attraction in Ireland. The Gala Dinner will take place in the Round Room at the Mansion House, which was purpose designed in 1821 to receive King George IV, and was subsequently the scene for the first meeting of the Irish Parliament in 1919, and the room in which the Anglo-Irish Treaty was ratified, ending the War of Independence and establishing the Irish Free State in 1921. The Gala Dinner will be preceded by visits to the Book of Kells in Trinity College. The Book of Kells, a 9th century manuscript that documents the four Gospels of the life of Jesus Christ, is Ireland’s greatest cultural treasure and the world’s most famous medieval manuscript. The logo for this year’s ECOC depicts Newgrange, a 5,200-year-old passage tomb located north east of Dublin, and one the earliest optical waveguides ever invented! The passage, measuring 19 metres, leads into an inner chamber. The passage and chamber are aligned with the rising sun at the Winter Solstice, so the chamber is only illuminated once a year. We are delighted to welcome ECOC to Dublin for the first time, while continuing the ECOC tradition of being at the leading technical – and social – edge, and hope you take the opportunity to enjoy both here in Dublin.

communication products and services. The conference and exhibition will take place in the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) and the Intercontinental Hotel, which are on the same site in the Ballsbridge area of Dublin. The conference will report the latest progress in optical communication technologies in workshops, selected papers, demo session, keynotes and special symposia. The workshops on Sunday will allow delegates to discuss some of the really hot topics in Optical Communications such as Machine Learning, Integrated Photonics and Next Generation Optical Access Networks. As in previous years, a highlight of ECOC are the Plenary and Invited talks, which attract world leading experts in optical communications research to discuss the most recent developments and outline their vision for the optical communications field over the coming years. Some of the key technical highlights from the programme include: • Sessions dedicated to fibres, components, and system designs for space division multiplexing Work presenting substantial progress in the field of silicon photonics • The use of Machine Learning techniques throughout the network, from enhancement of component performance to network optimisation • Substantial increases in both symbol rate and line rate per lane across all network applications • Dedicated sessions on probabilistic shaping and coding • Enhancements to the resilience and data rate of free space communications • The continued convergence of passive optical networks and 5G systems • The emergence of optical networking for data centre applications For the first time at ECOC, we have introduced an interactive poster session where all posters will be displayed on large

Dear Friends and Colleagues, The joint Chairs wish you a Cead Mile Failte (“One hundred thousand welcomes” in Irish) as the 45th European Conference on Optical Communications arrives in Dublin, Ireland for the first time. Dublin, the capital and largest city of Ireland, was established by the Gaels in the 7th century AD, and was later expanded as a Viking settlement before becoming Ireland’s principal settlement following the Norman invasion in the 12th century. The city expanded rapidly from the 17th century to become the second largest city in the British Empire. Following the partition of Ireland in 1922, Dublin became the capital of the Irish Free State, later renamed Ireland. Ireland and Dublin have been transformed over the past decades to become a thriving technology hub which hosts the European HQs for many of the world’s leading communication and technology companies. Ireland also has a rich history in the communications field, with the first transatlantic cable completed in 1858 between the west of Ireland (Valentia Island) and Newfoundland, completely revolutionising communication between Europe and the US. The European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC) is the leading European conference in the field of optical communication, and one of the most prestigious and long-standing events in this field. ECOC 2019 will have the usual mix of an exciting technical programme with a social programme that allows the delegates to get a feel of Irish culture. Not only will you see and hear the latest cutting-edge developments in optical communication, attendees of ECOC 2019 will also get the chance to experience the culture, history and legendary entertainment of Dublin. Parallel to the scientific conference, the ECOC exhibition covers a wide range of optical

Monday 23 rd - Morning Datacenters: Optics in Cloud Computing Inphi Switch/router pluggable coherent modules for 400G ZR application Speaker: Radha Nagarajan, CTO, Interconnect, Inphi Time: 11:00 The next evolution in the compact switch/router pluggable modules for the between datacenter application (DCI) is the 400G ZR. In 2016, we introduced the 100G, PAM4, DWDM, QSFP-28, COLORZ® module. This enabled high bandwidth, direct connections between switch and router interfaces in datacenters up to 80km apart, without the need for specialized optical transport equipment. The ZR modules will allow the 100G DCI ports to upgrade to 400G without sacrificing port density. This single wavelength, dual polarization, 60GBaud, QAM 16 based modules are either in the OSFP or QSFP DD form factors. We will present the low power DSP architecture and module design behind this revolutionary coherent transport module.

Ciena Design Considerations for 400G and 800G board mount optics Speaker: Hugues Tournier, COBO Electrical sub-group Chair Time: 12:45 Data center traffic is driving the need for increased electrical high- speed rates. As these electrical speeds increase, it is beneficial to shorten the electrical trace length and mount the optics close to the system ASICs. When developing systems which use 400G and beyond on-board optics (OBOs), designers will take into consideration PCB laminate choices, component placement, thermal modeling, and fiber routing. This presentation addresses these design considerations for the Consortium for On-Board Optics (COBO) compliant modules as well as share modeling and measurement results to help kick-start next generation system designs using 400G and 800G on-board optics. Keysight Data Center and Optical Network Innovation: Enabling the 5G Ecosystem Speaker: Beate Hoehne, Director of Sales & Business Development, Network and Data Center Solutions Time: 13:20 5G mobile communications will give rise to opportunities for higher quality of service (QoS) and bandwidth, as well as low-latency applications and services. This trend is driving the need for a new higher performance computing and wireline network infrastructure. Research, development, and manufacturing must be completed on a tight timeline, and within a competitive cost envelope — without compromising quality. This keynote offers new insight into the state of the industry and highlights future trends for high-speed computing, 400G/800G data center networking, terabit metro/long-distance networks, and the 5G wireline fronthaul infrastructure. Molex The Co-packaged Conundrum Speaker: Adit Narasimha, Vice President and General Manager, Optoelectronics Time: 13:55 The industry is actively discussing co-packaged optics and in-package optics for switching. However, the view of different solutions and the problems they allegedly solve is quite dependent on where the viewer sits in the value chain. This presentation will explore the practical considerations and trade offs involved in implementing such solutions. We will show how the choice of business model and multi-sourcing strategy could strongly impact the technical performance and reliability of the solution. We will also propose some technical and monetary figures of merit to compare different co-packaged architectures and to assess their suitability for a specific switch ASIC generation.

Cisco Leveraging 400 GbE to enable 800G Speakers: Mark Nowell, Cisco Fellow Time: 11:35

Significant effort and resource has been spent to bring numerous new technologies to market to enable the 400 GbE ecosystem. This talk will focus on what the status of 400 GbE, what the network needs beyond 400 GbE might be and how we can ensure we can meet those needs by leveraging these recent technology advances and extending as necessary. Microsoft Moving Optics Inside Speakers: Brad Booth, Manager, Networking and Connectivity Hardware Azure Hardware Systems Group, Microsoft Time: 12:10 Hyperscale datacenters are driving the next generation of optical networking development and have an become an important part of the overall optical communications market. The key trend driving this growth is the transition of a greater number of services and applications moving to the cloud. As this trend continues and new workloads like artificial intelligence and quantum computing start to emerge in hyperscale datacenters, optics will transition from the faceplate to on-board and eventually to co-packaging. This market watch presentation looks at the change in requirements that are driving these transitions and the status of the trend.

Program Format and/or Agenda We will cover three tracks with different speakers covering different technologies and initiatives in our OOPT Project Group

Monday 23 rd - Afternoon Fibre Access FTTH Council The State of Fibre and key market trends Speaker: Kees de Waard, President, FTTH Council Time: 14:30 The presentation will firstly include an overview of the fibre market with figures of our latest FTTH/B Market Panorama. The Market Panorama gives a detailed status on the market for FTTH/B in 39 countries. It particularly focuses on FTTH deployment and rollout and highlights the leading countries involved. It also provides the latest update of the European FTTH/B ranking which reflects the status of fibre coverage and take-up rate in Europe. The presentation will also touch upon the issues of copper switch-off or fibre/5G convergence. Source Photonics Challenges in 5G Optical Interfaces and Modules Speaker: Manish Mehta EVP, PLM Time: 15:05 Emerging applications requiring 5G connectivity will introduce network challenges demanding an increase in architecture flexibility. Since deployment of 5G networks began this year, the industry has already released a larger portfolio of optical transceivers serving front-haul and mid-haul requirements than was previously released in six years of LTE deployments. These enabling 5G optical interfaces vary in terms of protocol, data rate, reach requirements, PAM4 vs NRZ, bidirectional vs. unidirectional, and gray vs. colored, to just name a few. Rapid volume growth of 25G and even 50G interfaces will introduce new challenges in performance and temperature requirements for 25G grade lasers. Emerging aggregation needs are also driving proliferation of advanced 100G and beyond optical requirements. We will review the state- of-the art higher speed laser technologies along with various optical interfaces expected to be deployed for 5G front-haul and mid-haul architectures and applications. Infinera Innovation in Digital Sub-Carrier Technology: Redefining Optical Network Architectures Speaker: Dr. David Welch, Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Office, Infinera Time: 15:40 Access networks span a wide range of high-volume applications, all undergoing fundamental re-architecture and capacity expansion to accommodate bandwidth growth and new technologies. From wireless 5G xHaul, cable DAA/deep fiber, 100G NG-PON backhaul, and business services, access networks require point-to-multipoint connectivity from core/hub nodes to many edge/access locations. To date, this has been delivered by point-point optics, limited reach (typically <100km), and generational incompatibility between successive optic speeds (ie: 1G ≠ 2.5G ≠ 10G and so on). We introduce a new paradigm for next-gen access optical transport; one that enables highly efficient software- configurable and network-aware bandwidth to the network edge, high- density point-to-multipoint connectivity, and the optical reach of coherent optics; enabling simpler and more dynamic access service delivery. Nokia NG PON and 5G Speaker: Ed Harstead Lead Technology Strategist, Chief Technology Office, Fixed Networks Time: 16:15 Massively deployed TDM PON technologies have followed a predictable evolution: ever-increasing speeds from BPON to EPON to GPON and now 10G PONs. The next step will be 25G and 50G PONs, and as usual there is overlapping standardization in IEEE and ITU-T. While PONs have been deployed almost exclusively for FTTH, the anticipation of 5G densification focuses attention on mobile transport. Can TDM PONs support the requirements for 5G backhaul, midhaul and fronthaul? Doubts about the suitability for fronthaul have recently renewed interest in various flavors of WDM PONs. This talk will sort out the required components, the practicality and the timelines for these proliferating PON technologies.

Tuesday 24 th September – Morning Photonics Integration and digital silicon photonics Ovum The Market for High Speed Optical Communications Speaker: Lisa Huff, Principal Analyst, Optical Components Time: 10:20 In 2019, we are seeing the start of the adoption of 400G in data center networks while already shipping 400G/600G into telecom networks. Shipments to both will accelerate in 2020 and beyond fueled mainly by large cloud data center operators. Ovum will present market data to show the overall growth of this market and how optical integration and Silicon Photonics will become much larger contributors to it. Intel Integrated Silicon Photonics for Future Datacenter Applications Speaker: Thomas Liljeberg, General Manager, Integration for Intel Silicon Photonics Products Division Time: 10:55 The rapid growth in data center traffic is driving the need for increased performance and overall bandwidth of networking equipment, including optical interfaces and Ethernet switches, which are based on pluggable transceivers today. But looking just a few years ahead, bandwidth scalability challenges are looming in terms of density, cost, and power; challenges that require tighter integration of optics and networking silicon. We will review motivation for integration and the enabling technology elements, and discuss how co-packaged Silicon Photonics enables higher density, reduced power per bit, and ultimately the continued scalability of network bandwidth and performance. Lightwave Logic Polymer modulators with >50GHz performance for power consumption reduction at 400, 800, and 1600 Gbaud aggregated datarates Speaker: Dr. Michael Lebby, CEO Lightwave Logic Time: 11:30 The talk will discuss how polymer-based high-speed modulators will meet the new challenges of 400, 800, and 1600 Gbaud datarates. Results will be shown for polymer modulator performance that exceeds 50 GHz bandwidth which will support 100 Gbps PAM4 signalling with minimal signal processing on both transmit and receive ends of the link. It will also discuss the potential to drive polymer modulator bandwidths in excess of 80 GHz which enables 200 Gbps PAM4 signalling or 100 Gbps NRZ on a single channel. Moreover, with higher performance active EO polymers, Lightwave Logic’s platform can provide a lower power consumption for systems through direct driving of modulators without the use of dedicated (and expensive) driver chips. This talk will also review the latest work in photonics roadmaps (IPSR – International Photonics Systems Roadmap process, 2019) that look out towards 1600 Gbps with polymer-based technologies.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Innovative integrated photonics for green supercomputing Speakers: Di Liang, Senior Research Scientist Time: 12:05 The ending decade of 2010s is an era when cloud-driven data centers and photonic links, particularly silicon photonics, enable each other to scale. Same promise is hold to develop interconnect solutions with energy efficiency, large bandwidth, low latency, and affordable cost, etc. for next-generation high-performance computing. To fulfill this mission, innovative materials, device structures, link architecture and design mindset on top of our silicon photonic platform, namely a silicon-plus photonic integration, will be introduced. I will also elaborate our vision to build an open silicon photonics ecosystem to better prevail the technical challenges and create more business opportunities. Ciena Photonic Integration Opportunities for Next-Generation Coherent High-Capacity Systems Speaker: Martin Guy, Senior Director Time: 12:40 Next-generation, high-capacity optical coherent transmission systems at 400G and above will demand different sets of requirements depending on the target applications. Long haul and ultra-long haul systems, such as submarine and inter-continental links, will have to be optimized for fiber capacity and reach. Shorter-reach applications, such as metro, DCI and 5G access links, will need low power and high- density, pluggable modules. From an optical components perspective, the right combination of photonic integration technologies will be mandatory to address all of the stringent requirements related to bandwidth, size, power and cost. In this presentation, we will review the opportunities associated with InP and Silicon Photonics optical material platforms and photonic packaging technologies to address the challenges of next-generation high-capacity optical coherent transmission systems. Acacia Communications Next Generation Coherent – Beyond transport networks Speaker: Tom Williams, Vice President of Marketing Time: 13:15 After initial adoption in long-haul transport applications, use of coherent technology has consistently progressed toward shorter reaches. Multi- haul solutions addressing network applications ranging from edge to submarine are available today, while standardized coherent interfaces in pluggable form factors are expected to drive wider deployment of IPoDWDM architectures and adoption of coherent in even shorter reach applications. At higher data rates, “coherent grey optics” will compete with direct detect in non-DWDM applications inside data centers. What are the advances necessary for widespread deployment of coherent in these high-volume applications and how will this impact future network architectures and development roadmaps?
