like a foretaste of glory. A number of us spent an after noon in the home of a friend, together with a man o f God from across the sea. What a heavenly time we had! A brother who had been present called us on the phone later and said, “ To be present there this afternoon was like a spiritual bath.” What had happened? We had been together with Christ. The man himself was only a man. He had not amounted to anything, until one day Christ moved into his life in a very marked and definite way, and he was filled with the Spirit. W e enjoy spiritual literature. It often drives us to our knees. But we are not dependent on others for the sustenance of our spiritual life when we have Christ Himself living in our own hearts, day and night, in August as well as in January, in the desert or on the fer tile plain. Believer, get down on your knees and thank Him that He is with you Himself always. Recognize His pres ence at all times. Blessed mystery—-Christ in y ou ! “ Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are cor rupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust ot them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. . . Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day o f slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not re sist you” (Jas. 5:1-6). Some people are saying that the country is almost ripe for a revolution. Let us hope not. But present con ditions might lead to revolution unless something is done in a substantial way to change the conditions. Ex-President Calvin Coolidge said, “ What this coun try needs is a revival of religion and a change of heart.” Christians are looking for the rapture of the saints, which thousands believe is imminent. That rapture would naturally bring a revolution, with the lack of law and its enforcement; for the constraining power o f God will be withdrawn. Rumors are that the' country never before needed a nation-wide revival of Christian truth and life from God our Father, as it needs it today. T he C ure of D epression In 1877, Minnesota had a plague o f grasshoppers. The farmers sought aid from the Governor, and he called a meeting at the statehouse for open discussion on the mat ter. One by one suggestions were made, until Governor Pillsbury arose and said, “ Gentlemen, inasmuch as this curse has come upon us from God for reasons best known to Him, I suggest that we ask people everywhere in the state to gather together for prayer in schoolhouses, homes, churches, to supplicate God for alleviation of this curse.” To this they all consented, and before evening o f the next day, millions of grasshoppers died and others dis appeared very suddenly, and the people learned the way of righteousness that day. God, in His holy Word, offers a sure remedy for every kind of depression: “ If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chron. 7:14). THE , CURE FOR DEPRESSION [Continued from page 153} The Apostle James comments upon them thus:
and cannot, because it is of the unregenerate world, world ly. But He has a far better program of His own that satis fies the life which He owns. A young lad of fourteen was recently converted. A neighbor called at a home where he was present and in vited the young folk to attend a theater. At once, they declined and gave as their reason that they had been saved and were through with the world and its shows. The neighbor was surprised at first, then, in a bantering way, he said: “ How do you fellows ever expect to get a girl if you don’t, take her to a show once in a while ?” Quick as a flash, the young lad answered: “ If you go to the right kind of a church, you will get the right kind of a gir l ” I . . , . Back of that statement, we see how his spiritual mind, though of recent birth, intuitively recognized that the indwelling Christ gives the believer a distinct sphere of social contacts in perfect accord with the mind o f Christ. I ntellectual P roblems T ake the intellectual problems. Opportunities for edu cation through schools, the press, periodicals, lectures, and radio are ever on the increase. An intellectualism is created that is felt by all. Even the high school student soon recognizes that the conclusions of this worldly intellectual ism are diametrically opposed to the world-views of Scripture. I f he is concerned about it, he soon finds that the only way he can reconcile the two is to adopt a view of Scripture that robs it of its authority. Sad to say, many a preacher and teacher is ready to help him in this false adjustment. Shall he throw away the knowledge o f the schools? By no means! A high school senior put it this way one day; he was trying to be a Christian and at the same time keep up with the philosophies o f the secular schools: “ Do you expect me to throw away what my pro fessor teaches me for something an old Jew wrote thou sands of years ago ?” His language at once betrayed that he had never been born again. True knowledge should be retained with grati tude.- God give us a greater measure of it! True knowl edge's true even though held by the devil. When Christ actually reigns within, the intellectual life distinguishes between the knowledge, or true learning, of the world, and its wisdom or philosophy of life. The former is intellec tual light, but the latter is spiritual darkness. That is why some of the most educated minds of today have been able to master the world’s knowledge but have honestly rejected its philosophy. The world-view o f divine revelation, Spirit- breathed, is seen to be truth, as the indwelling Christ illu mines their minds. The facts of human knowledge are always in accord with Scripture, but the philosophic con clusions of unregenerate man are opposed to the revela tion of God. Christ within sets both the heart and the mind right. S piritual P roblems e have also the problems of spiritual life. In the presence of some Spirit-filled man or woman, it is easy to keep the spiritual life in motion as living water. During a series of revival meetings, the movements of God in the soul are very evident. But what about the dry spells in be tween? How1 can I keep the flame of divine loVe in my heart when I am in the midst of the matter-of-fact sur roundings of this work-a-day world? Remember that the Holy Spirit has brought you into Christ and Christ into you. He dwells in your heart, actually and personally. You are now a partaker of His fullness. He is the fountain of spiritual life; in fact, He is your spiritual life. We enjoy the stimulating fellowship of godly men and women. It is
