the world’s civilization with any sort of saving saltness. H. G. Wells, the famous British historian and author, re cently declared in a broadcast message, that the world should be declared bankrupt and its debts written off. Bankrupt it is, but its debts will never be written off until they are written off by the blood of “ the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” Sometime ago, the caustic pen of H. L. Mencken paid his editorial respects (in the American Mercury') to hu man government in the following words: It is truly amazing that the human race, in manag ing this, its principle business on earth, has managed it so badly. . . . In all other fields, man is the most in ventive and ingenious o f animals, but here he is left far behind by the anthropoid apes, and shamed beyond measure by the bees and ants. Not a civilized people o f today is at ease to do its work and seek its happiness. Everywhere there is waste and folly, injustice and terror. And no way out is in sight. A fter MacDonald is disposed of, England will only get a worse. What Italy will get after Mussolini, and Russia after the soap-boxers, and the United States after Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover, I hate to think. Thus, this famous worldling utters his cry of despair. Hear him: “No way out in sight!” What a striking evi dence that the world is rapidly nearing, on the other hand, its “way out” ! Jesus said that “ the kingdom of God is nigh at hand” (Lk. 2 1 :31) at a time when “ there shall be . . . upon the earth distress of nations without-a-passage- out” (Lk. 21:25). The word translated “ perplexity,” from the Greek word aporia, literally means “ no way out”— Mencken’s own words! ■ So, friend Mencken, we do not share your fears! We rejoice to think of the prospect that lies just beyond Hoover, MacDonald, Mussolini, the Russian “ soap-box ers,” et al. The W ay Out T hank G od , the Prince of that upperworld also cometh ! “ And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed. . . . The dream is certain and the interpretation thereof sure” (Dan. 2:44, 45). “ He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth. And in his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth. He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth. . . . He shall deliver the needy when he crieth, the poor also, and him that hath no helper. . . . He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence. . . . His enemies shall lick the dust. . . . Blessed be his glo rious name forever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen, and Amen! The prayers of David, the son of Jesse [and mine!] are ended.” Listen In The Bible Institute of Los Angeles is on the air several days each week. A Headless W orld an was formed in the image of God, to be God’s fel low, to “ have dominion . . . over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Gen. 1 :28)—not without God, but under God. It is written that “ the head of every man is Christ . . . and the head of Christ is God” ( 1 Cor. 11:3). When man tries to work without his Head, he makes about the same progress as does a freshly decapi tated fowl! From the crow and the show of fine feathers, this twentieth century rooster which we call “modern civili zation” has appeared to be “ some fine bird” ! But it seems that in recent days, this cocky featherhead, “modern civ ilization,” has presumed that he can get along without a Head. Well, he is getting along without it—here, there, nowhere, and back again ! Without its Head, this old earth is going through a series of gymnastic contortions, with all mankind dancing aroun$, vainly endeavoring to keep from being splashed with the deluge of blood. Now* to put God at the head of our modern civiliza tion is a Herculean task. We seriously doubt that it will ever be done. Governor Moore, of New Jersey, anent the famous Lindbergh baby case, distressing the world at this moment, says, “ America must return to the God o f our fathers” if our crime problems are to be solved. Very well! But what is there that will halt America in her downward course and cause her to return to the God of her fathers? Certainly, the emasculated, bloodless, gospel that is permeating most of our churches and the church schools will never do it ! “ Salt is good : but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it ? It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill ; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear” ( Mk. 9 :50 ; Lk. 14:34, 35). There is certainly nothing in these words of the Master that gives us hope that the emasculated Christianity of our day will again possess saltness. Rather, it is due for the rubbish heap. And ere it goes, it is the bounden duty of every remaining child of “ the faith of our fathers” to save yet a few mbre from the burning. Significant Confessions o f Governmental Failure ust this morning (March 10), the press informs us that yesterday, Representative Karch, o f Illinois', stood on the floor of the United States Congress, and referring to the Lindbergh kidnapping case, said : Organized society and organized government, lost in a sense of utter impotency, have capitulated completely and abjectly; and acknowledging a power higher than themselves, now, on bended knees, beg of underworld lords to do what cities, counties, states, and national gov ernment and millions of citizens admit they cannot do— rescue the Lindbergh baby ! That is notice to the parents o f every child in America . . . that our government can no longer protect them. What a confession of the fraility of human govern ment ! And what a confession from the fountainhead of the mightiest existing government of man, to the effect that nations that refuse to fall on “ bended knees” and acknowl edge the living God as “ a power higher than themselves,” will soon find themselves “ on bended knees” abjectly ac knowledging thè “ underworld” as “ a power higher than themselves” ! What an admission that a civilization that refuses the rule of the upperworld must needs bow before the rule of the underworld! Yea, and the prince of the underworld soon cometh ! Many, many are the quotations that we can glean these days from the pens of the world’s great, betraying their hopelessness, their utter despair, in the matter of resalting
