New Illustrations [To find practical, everyday illustrations o f spiritual truths is a task assigned to students of the Bible Institute o f Los An geles in connection with their classroom work. The following are a few o f the il lustrations submitted ,.-— E d ito r .] Drawn from the Scrap Heap This illustration was suggested by the working of a magnetic crane in a junk yard, moving scrap iron. Some o f the junk is small, bright and shiny, and this is the easiest drawn by the magnetic power, while the older, heavier, corroded pieces offer greater resistance and are harder drawn and picked up. So the spiritual Magnet, Jesus Christ, the Son of God with power, lifted up, draws all men unto Him. It is the young, bright, shiny-faced children, uncorroded by sin, unrusted, that are first drawn, and how much more easily ! Some of them, as in the case o f the scrap, jump from the pile, eager to meet the Magnet as it ap proaches. The older ones, the hardened men and women rusted in life and soul, partially destroyed, are drawn with far more diffi culty. Still, the same power draws each, and it can lift all from the scrap heap of life. Notice, too, that some scraps are drawn directly by the magnet, but those in turn, by becoming conductors of that same power through them, draw still other pieces. So we are drawn to Christ by His power, and His power, working through us, draws others. For what purpose is the iron drawn from the scrap heap? To be destroyed? No. To be cleaned up? No. To be painted over and used? No. It is all taken to the re generating fire of the blast furnace where it is given new life and then sent out again into the world to perform a new service. So it is with man. The cleansing, re generating fire o f the Holy Spirit gives new life and a new purpose, and the Chris tian is sent out into service in the world. — R obert D .'-A n n a n d . . The Gold Inlay In a dentist’s office, whenever an inlay is to be made, the filling is first made o f wax, then it is invested in a mold with in vestment compound and put in an iron tray full o f stones. The tray is put over the gas and left there until all the wax is burned out. The dentist then takes a piece o f gold and melts it with a combination of oxygen and gas, and by the use o f a cast ing machine, the place left empty by the wax is filled with the pure gold. The in vestment, which is now black and dirty, is removed, and the perfect gold filling is revealed. It is then washed in acid. Does not this illustrate our lives as Christians? W e are born in sin and self ishness and are weak in ourselves, as was the wax filling, but God is trying us in this world o f sin, and is testing us in the fur nace o f affliction, that all the selfishness may be burned out o f our lives, enabling us to be filled with His glory, as the empty space left by the wax was filled with the pure gold. The gold, too, must pass through the fire, and it took a far greater heat o f gas and oxygen to melt the gold in order that it might enter the empty space left by the burned out wax. So Jesus Christ also suf- [Continued on page 196]

“ A short time ago I began to think about an income for the future. Experience taught me that some in vestments were not satis factory and secure. I had very little to expend but that little meant much to me. Safety therefore was the first requisite.” — M. P. . . . New York

“ In these days of uneasiness about investments, it is so comfortable to know that my annuity agreement with the American Bible Society is absolutely safe and that I can depend on the pay ments from it. And I know that all the time my money is doing good.” A. D. . . . Illinois

Instituted in 1816 this organization has for over eighty years been issuing annuity agreements and has never missed a single payment. Many testimonials similar to those above have been received expressing great satisfac tion in the freedom from anxiety made possible by the safe character of the Society’s annuities. C j ™ n l i f e The safety feature of an Ameri- 93M j mg can Bible Society annuity agree ment is further enhanced by the assurance that on through the years it will continue to do good. Great satisfaction comes to the Christian in knowing that because of his annuity the comfort, the counsel and the challenge of the Scriptures will he distributed across the earth through the service of the American Bible Society. “ Mrs. S. and L are thoroughly pleased with the annuity agreement of your Society which we hold. We know that it is safe, and that the money which we have placed with you on the annuity basis will return to us a steady and reliable income no matter how long we may live. We like to think also that when we no longer need this income the principal will be used for the translation, publica tion and distribution of the Scriptures, a work so essential to the Christian missionary program.” tJJjJ?-/.
