Finally, the Hebrews acquired from the Egyptians the various forms o f flutes and horns, so that, when the Hebrews left Egypt they took with them its music and its fully developed orchestra o f instru ments. A t every opportunity, King David increased the importance o f music. In the First Book o f Chronicles, we find him ap pointing certain Levites to the ark, and also certain Levites to administer to the music. And with that task completed, he raised a glorious song o f praise to God, a song that had music lurking in each o f its phrases and in every one of its cadences : “ O give thanks unto the Lord, call upon his name ; Make known his doings among the peoples. Sing unto him, sing praises unto him ; Speak ye o f all his marvelous works.” When David reached a ripe old age, and when he appointed his son, Solomon, King over Israel, he gathered to him all the priests o f Israel, and we learn the be wildering fact that, among all these priests, there were “ four thousand who praised the Lord with the instruments which I made to praise therewith”— four thousand professional musicians! —S elected . Duet—“ The Beautiful G a r d e n o f Prayer.” , Meditation on the Lesson The topic for today is one of the most important in the world. “ Prayer is the Christian’s vital breath.” Prayer is the door to the divine treasure house which contains supplies for all our needs. Dr. Torrey has given ten specific rea sons why Christians should pray: 1. Because there is a devil (Eph. 6: 12, 13). 2. Because prayer is God’s appointed way for obtaining things (Jas. 4 :2 ). 3. Because those men whom God set forth as a pattern o f what He ex pected Christians to be—the apos tles—regarded prayer as the most important business of their lives. 4. Because prayer occupied a very prominent place and played a very important part in the earthly life o f our Lord (Lk. 6:12; Mk. 1:35). 5. Because praying is the most impor tant part o f the present ministry of our risen Lord (Heb. 7:25; Rom. 8 :34). 6. Because prayer is the means that God has appointed for our receiv ing mercy and obtaining grace to help in time o f need (Heb. ,4:16; Lk. 11:8). 7. Because prayer in the name o f Jesus Christ is the way Jesus Christ Him self has appointed for His disciples to obtain fullness o f jo y (John 16: 24; Psa. 16:11). 8. Because prayer is the means that God has appointed for our obtain ing freedom from all anxiety (Phil. 4:6, 7). 9. Because prayer is the method that God Himself has appointed, where by our hearts shall not become over charged with surfeiting and cares of this life (Lk. 21:34-36). 10. Because o f what prayer accomp lishes : (a ) P r a y e r promotes spiritual growth (Psa. 139:23, 24 ; 51:2; 119:18). (b ) Prayer brings power into our work. (c ) Prayer avails for the conver sion o f others. (d ) Prayer brings blessings to the church. Testimonies. Quiet Hour. Benediction.

Illustration T he T reasure H ouse of P rayer In this treasure house are all rich jewels exceeding great and precious, the door to which the key o f promise can open. Com pute the worth o f that single jewel, “ Ask and ye shall receive” ; or that other ruby; “ All things work together for good to them that love God.” Bring forth that royal Kahinoar, “ He that believeth shall be saved.” When Caesar once gave a man a great reward, he exclaimed, “ This is too great a gift for me to receive.” “ But,” said Caesar, “ it is not too great a gift for me to give.” So the smallest promise in thy casket is too much for thee to deserve, yet the most magnificent promise is not too great for the King o f kings to bestow.— S purgeon . Discussion Material I. His “N ay ” “No good thing will he withhold” (Psa. 84:11). God’s “nay” more blessed answer is When spoken unto thee, More tender, freighted down with love, Than any “yea” could be. —T hayer . II. Two M en at P rayer “ Two men went up into the temple to pray” (Lk. 18:10). Two went to pray? Oh! rather say, One went to brag, the other to pray. One stands up close, and treads on high, There the other dares not lend his eye. III. T he P lace There is a place where thou canst touch the eyes O f blinded men to instant perfect sight; There is a place where thou canst say, “Arise,” To dying captive, bound in chains o f night. There is a place where thou canst reach the store O f hoarded gold, and free it for the Lord; There is a place here, or on a distant shore Where thou canst send the worker and the Word. There is a place where heaven’s resistless power Responsive moves to thine insistent plea; There is a place, a silent holy hour, There God Himself descends and works for thee. Where is that secret place—dost thou ask where ? Oh, sou l! It is the secret place o f prayer. —A delaide A. P ollard . IV. C hoice B its God looks not at the oratory o f your prayers, how elegant they may be; nor at the geometry of your prayers, how long they may b e ; nor at the arithmetic o f your prayers, how many they may be; but the sincerity o f them He looks at. —P hillips B rooks . George Mueller was a mighty man of prayer, because he was a mighty giver. What he received from God never stuck to his fingers; he immediately passed it on to others. One nearer to God’s altar trod; The other to the altar’s God. *—C rashaw .

Other reasons why we need to pray are: because we need help; because we need guidance; because God is our Father; be cause we are weak.
