far more than we suffer for His sake, for He endured Calvary that He might make possible the infilling o f our lives with His Holy Spirit. Some inlays are left in the fire longer greater afflictions for the Lord’s sake. But than others, so many Christians suffer some day we shall see that our lives will shine like the gold inlay, after it has been perfectly moulded. |—A nna C ederlund K urkowske .

“ On another occasion, we were preach ing at a junction to a large and attentive audience, and Abayakoon had explained at length God’s wonderful plan of salva tion. After he had finished, several ques tions were asked regarding heaven and the doing o f merit or good works, and Abaya koon answered these in a very clear way. What a joy it is not only to give out the old, old story but to see others developing and growing in grace and eager to see their fellow countrymen saved! S piritual S ight N ecessary “ Recently, while in one of our outsta- tions, we called at the house of a man who was interested in the gospel. W e found his older brother, a man o f about forty-five, had been quite blind from childhood. W e read the story o f Christ healing the blind man and had a long talk with him about the need of spiritual sight. It was really pathetic to see how eagerly the man listened. He asked us where the Pool o f Siloam was in which the blind man washed. But we explained to him that the greater need was to be washed in the blood o f the Lamb and to receive for giveness o f sins. As we left, he asked us to be sure to come again soon and tell him more o f this wonderful story. “Do pray that, as we go around in this way bearing the glad tidings, many may really receive the Word and pass from death to life.” The Trend o f the Times The days immediately prior to the re turn o f the great Head of the Church are, according to the Scriptures, to be charac terized by wide-spread departure from the faith. The evidences o f such declension are rife. A movement which emanated from Cambridge University bore startling witness to that fact. Groups o f under graduates of both sexes were meeting reg ularly to discuss their religious problems, and their published confessions afforded sad reading. The Bible was practically ignored as authoritative, and the doctrine of the deity o f Christ was regarded rather as a subject for discussion than o f accep tance. The personality of the Holy Spirit was virtually ignored. Experiences based upon emotionalism were the main issue, the result being a dangerous tendency to fanaticism and even spiritism. Recently published statements by pro fessors in the Baptist Union College o f Great Britain were o f a gravely rational istic character. Contemptuous views were advanced as to the Apostle Paul’s inspired teaching regarding the second coming. The Epistles o f Jude and 2 Peter were put down as forgeries by the “ first two funda mentalists.” Moses was declared to be un known as a writer and any.direct revela tion from God was absolutely rejected. —A rthur H. enemy is pressing and depressing; conflict and suffering are in the ranks o f His wit nesses; shall we not pray?”

Encouragement from Ceylon CY everal years ago, one of our finest and most capable Bible Institute students, James A. Ker, went to Ceylon. In a re cent letter, he sends encouraging word concerning his work. A part o f it reads as follow s: “The year that has just closed has been a year o f real blessing in the work. Sev eral have taken their stand for Christ and confessed Him in baptism. Only yester day, we had the joy o f baptizing three more. Others are asking for baptism, but we are keeping them waiting for a little while yet. The Lord is opening up to us fresh avenues o f service, and we are pray ing that we may be enabled to follow on where He is leading. A M iniature B ible I nstitute “As some o f you are aware, we have for the past eighteen months been training a Sinhalese young man for the gospel min istry, as there is no fundamental training school in Ceylon. W e are glad to report that he has been making splendid progress and shows a real desire to get other men saved and to spread abroad the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. “ The course o f study is very compre hensive. It includes church history, evan gelism and methods of personal work, in troduction to the English Bible, book study and exegesis, chapter summary, Bible out lining and teaching methods, and homi letics, in addition to a systematic study of the Bible and its principle doctrines. A prescrcibed amount of practical work is required, and a report of the work done is handed in each week. Regular examina tions are held on the work done, and he has manifested real progress in the appre hension o f spiritual truth. “ But what is perhaps our greatest joy is the way he is developing as a preacher both in the pulpit and in the open air. On numerous^ occasions during the past month, we have been out together at street corners and in surrounding villages, hold ing gospel meetings. It is a joy to hear how clearly and scripturally young Abaya- koon presents the gospel. “At one place, we stopped by a way- side shop and opened up a picture roll o f the story o f the rich man and Lazarus. Soon a large crowd gathered and listened very attentively as the way o f life and the way o f death was presented to them. One man asked that we come again and tell them more about these things. After dis tributing tracts to all who were there, we passed on for a meeting, in another place.
