2023 Highlights Report

SPOTLIGHTS PARKS

Bankshot™ Basketball Courts Enables New Partnerships Last year, Parks installed Bankshot™ Basketball Courts in South Park. Bankshot™ is a non- exclusionary game that wheelchair athletes and the able-bodied can play together with neither at a disadvantage. Participants play alongside, not against each other, creating equality for everyone. The Parks kicked off the opening of the courts by hosting a Bankshot™ Basketball clinic with the Southpointe Grizzlies, a local hockey team for special needs children. This summer, Allegheny County Parks partnered with the Special Olympics to host a Bankshot™ Basketball Clinic, titled “Basketball, Bocce, and Bagels” with their athletes. During the event, participants were free to play non-exclusionary games of Bankshot™ Basketball and bocce. Bagels, beverages, and giveaways were also provided. Over 25 people participated in the clinic.

Greater Golf and Programming Attendance Both the North and South Park golf courses have officially moved to a reservation system for tee times, resulting in greater efficiency. The new system has increased revenue, positively impacted the pace of play, and has made an all- around improvement to the course for the public and the staff. Golf course admissions and revenue were 20% higher than the previous year. In 2023, Parks offered more programs, had more people participate in those programs, and is finally returning to full capacity for existing programs after a few years of pandemic restrictions.
