South Park Children’s Playground
North Park Tennis Court Road Trail The recently completed trail along Tennis Court Road in North Park is a welcome amenity to users of the popular corridor that runs from the North Park boathouse to Walter Road. Amongst the busiest areas in all nine county parks, the newly paved ADA-compliant route enables pedestrians a safer way to travel along the one-half mile long road and will help reduce congestion and conflict with vehicles. The area is busy year round, as visitors can easily access prime fishing spots and charming views of the lake and the North Fork of Pine Creek, as well as enjoy the nearby playground, tennis and pickleball courts, shelters, and boathouse. Included in the project are additional seating and landscape improvements, a new bridge constructed by Allegheny County carpenters, and streambank stabilization measures to control excessive erosion. Over 2,500 trees and shrubs were planted to help improve air and water quality and provide enhanced wildlife habitat along the creek. The project was publicly bid and awarded to Tail Industries, Inc., for $858,353.85.
The children’s playground in South Park, located at the intersection of Brownsville Road and Corrigan Drive, was renovated and opened to the public in December 2023. The site work construction was awarded to Mare Solutions Inc. and took approximately five months. The KOMPAN brand playground equipment installation was completed by AllPlay+, and the playground safety surface installed by ForeverLawn. The total project construction cost was $1.8 million. The site design was completed by the Parks Department with engineering support from KU Resources. The project also received a $500,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Community Conservation Partnerships Program. The nearly 30 year old previous playground was replaced in its entirety and complimented by new paths, seating, stairs, retaining walls, and landscape improvements. There are play areas designed for children ages two through five and five through 12. The project features nature-inspired playground equipment built from black locust lumber, a naturally rot-resistant wood species, and showcases locally sourced sandstone and native plant species.
