wood shelter at the playground site, believed to have been built in 1940, was incorporated into the new design. The site’s parking lot also had a major makeover. Nearly 30,000 square feet of asphalt paving was removed and replaced with green space, including 133 new trees, which will significantly reduce polluted stormwater runoff to nearby Catfish Run. Despite removing asphalt, the new lot layout has more parking spaces than its predecessor. Due to cold temperatures, the final parking lot asphalt sealing and line striping will not be completed until spring 2024, but temporary line striping was installed for use over the winter. Hartwood Stables Parking and ADA Accessibility The Hartwood Acres Stables parking and accessibility project enables universal parking and access to the courtyard event space and restroom facility. Of the 45 new parking spaces, only two were constructed utilizing an impervious surface (concrete). The area where the parking spaces were installed was existing lawn. That surface was restored by using a stabilizing blend of soil and a large aggregate, which provides a solid base for vehicles, but still allows grass to grow and stormwater to infiltrate. If a conventional parking lot were built, using asphalt paving for example, the 43 spaces would generate about 175,000 gallons of stormwater runoff per year. Any stormwater from the new construction will be managed on-site, through the green parking design as well as on-site stormwater facilities. This type of design will help preserve the charming countryside character of the historic stables while also minimizing impact on downstream water quality in the Little Pine Creek watershed.
