SPOTLIGHTS PUBLIC WORKS
Roberto Clemente (Sixth Street) Bridge Rehabilitation Project Public Works reopened the Roberto Clemente (Sixth Street) Bridge after completing a $34.4 million rehabilitation project. Work included repairs to the bridge’s structural steel, concrete/ masonry substructure, and stairs on the downtown side; replacement of the concrete deck, expansion dams, sidewalks, and utility lines; refurbishment of the pylons; repainting of the bridge and handrails; placement of scour protection; drainage improvements; and replacement of navigational lighting and street lighting. Some additional work on the bridge, including installation of bike lane delineators, will occur during the spring. As part of the project, an enhanced lighting system was installed on the Roberto Clemente, Andy Warhol and Rachel Carson Bridges, otherwise known as the Sister Bridges. It includes
2,628 feet of linear fixtures on the suspenders, 192 rounded fixtures on the eyebars, 132 spotlight fixtures on the towers and piers, and 12 replica fixtures atop the pylons. The enhanced lighting system premiered on Light Up Night with an artist- commissioned light show called Observing Light by Rob Long. Also, during the project, approximately 11,000 locks were removed from the Roberto Clemente Bridge handrails and donated to the Industrial Arts Workshop of Hazelwood. The nonprofit organization teaches students of all ages about sculpture creation and artistic literacy, including the fundamentals of welding, design, engineering principles, and safety standards.
