Waste Reduction and Recycling The county continues to reduce waste that enters landfills by redistributing unused items to other county departments and recycling everyday recyclables like plastics, paper, and carboard, as well as e-waste, and scrap metals. Through implementation of new waste diversion requirements, scrap metal recycling totals from all county facilities for the first half of 2023 totaled over 161 tons (323,800 lbs.), including over 10 tons (20,740 lbs.) from a DHS office remodel and 48 tons (96,400 lbs.) from a County Office Building construction project.

Environmental Excellence Award In 2023, Allegheny County received the Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence for the Green Parking Lot in South Park. This project involved the installation of a 2.5-acre water-permeable green parking lot that was designed to capture 95% of all rainfall, which amounts to about 2.5 million gallons each year. The county was honored at the Annual Banquet hosted by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council in Harrisburg, PA.
