School-Community Summer Program Partnerships Using American Rescue Plan funds, the Department of Children Initiatives (DCI) sought to increase the number of available summer programming slots for children completing kindergarten through seventh grade. The department identified and funded proposals that build new or strengthen current partnerships between schools and community-based organizations. Serving children in communities with a current lack of sufficient summer program opportunities will help bridge the gap between the schoolyear and summer and limit summer learning loss. Priority was given to proposers leveraging additional funding sources, as well as those with an emphasis on comprehensive, five-day-per- week programming with regular attendance that spans the complete summer. Out-of-School Time Capacity Building
As one of DCI’s year-one pilot programs, the Out-of-School Time Capacity Building program provided support to expand the number of out- of-school time (OST) opportunities for children and youth in underserved areas across the county. Nine unique program providers created over 600 new program slots and to- date have served nearly 700 children.
