readers. First, it provides an ex cellent historic background of the Church in China, a t the time the Communists took control of the country, and second, it gives an excellent presentation of the way in which the Communists deal with Christians. The author deals extensively w ith th e “T h r e e Selfs” : self-governing, self-sup porting and s e lf -p ro p a g a tin g , which constitute the policy of the Communist regime in China in dealing with Christianity. The book is a good catalog of pollution problems. It deals with the many ways in which man is polluting the earth rather than with space science. Implicit in the title is the hope that space tech nology can help solve some of these truly horrifying problems. The fact is that orbiting space stations are just another observa tion platform. The author’s con clusion is pitiful, as one quotes from the last page of the book: “No wonder so many people feel uncertain as we plunge into the Space Age! Yet a t this same time most of us feel — when we stop and listen to our innermost hearts — a great new hope, an intuitive hunch that God’s pur pose is a t work in us as we go forth. So let us face this dawn ing future, participate actively instead of just letting it happen, and help to plan it as trustees for the generations yet unborn. “Compared to the wondrous years ahead, all our recorded his tory with its magnificent proces sions of saints, seers, poets, phi losophers, law-givers, and light- givers, all the mighty dead and the billions of humble dead — all these will seem only a prologue to a drama b eyond even the SPACE: A NEW DIRECTION FOR MANKIND by Edward B. PERSONS IN CRISIS by R. Lofton Hudson

Mr. Hudson’s work is more than a guide to one called upon to counsel those who are facing a crisis. He also presents a strong appeal to the church for a more compassionate approach to those who are going through deep waters. It is a needed em phasis. While som e tim e s he seems to raise more problems than he solves yet his book will open up vital subjects for con sideration. This should cau se those who do become involved to face their situation with the wisdom of careful thought prior to its occurrence. Among the areas where counseling help is given is in relation to unwed mothers, divorcees, the bereaved, the sick and alcoholics. — 126 pages; cloth; Broadman Press.
