Dental Hygiene Chemical Hazard Control Policy The Dental Hygiene Program maintains a Hazard Control Program. The students, faculty, and staff are made aware of the various chemical and other hazards throughout the program curriculum. It is the responsibility of each instructor to cover occupationally related hazards as they pertain to the courses they teach. A copy of the Program’s Hazard Control Policy is located in the Program Director’s Office. This program contains all Material Safety Data Sheets for each chemical, and when necessary, ensures the labeling of secondary containers. Hodges University also maintains a campus- wide Hazard Communication Program due to the large number of hazardous chemicals and other substances maintained on campus. A copy of procedures is maintained by the Campus Safety Director.

Students are reminded that occupational exposure incidents occur and students are not punished in cases of instrument sticks . However, it is a serious error of judgment and professionalism to hide the incident and not report it to the instructors. All students who knowingly allow an incident/accident to go unreported are equally guilty of dishonesty and will be reprimanded in accordance to the Disciplinary Procedures of the Dental Hygiene Program. • Splash into Oral, Nasal, or Eye Mucosa o Immediately seek assistance from nearest clinical instructor o In the event of eye and/or nasal splash, immediately proceed to the Central Sterilization area and cleanse the eye(s) with water with the clinical instructor. o In the event of an oral mucosa splash, immediately proceed to the Central Sterilization area and rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash o When completed, the instructor will complete an HU Accident and Incident Report. o Students will seek additional evaluation from their physician or hospital to have injury and any necessary preventive measures or tests performed. o If an exposure occurs off-site, follow the policy for Accidents Occurring Off Campus. • Eyewash Station: • The Eyewash Station is located in the Central Sterilization area. • Use of the station: o Lift the dust covers off the spray heads o Step on the foot pedal to start the flow of water. If no water comes out, be certain the water flow is turned on. o Lift the hand lever to turn the unit off. • When to use the station–when any potentially hazardous materials contact the eye(s)
