Foreign Object Policy Protocol for incidents involving patients swallowing various foreign objects associated with dental treatment provision: • The student clinician must alert the supervising dentist. • The student clinician will stay with the patient, monitor the patient’s vital sign and observe the patient for acute respiratory distress. • The dentist will make a preliminary diagnosis from the clinical signs and symptoms and the patient’s response to careful questioning. • Further treatment or care for the patient will be directed by the advice of the dentist. • An Incident Report must be filed by the student clinician and dentist.

***In the event the swallowing of an object constitutes a medical emergency, call 911

• Patient will need to be transported to the hospital for x-rays • Complete an Incident Report and send to Program Director • The dentist will make an entry in the patient’s record completely describing the occurrence, but do NOT refer to the Incident Report in the entry. • If the patient refuses radiographs at the hospital, proper notation should be documented in the patient’s chart.
