PROFESSIONALISM ACCOUNTABILITY RESPONSIBILITY PATIENT CARE

Clinical Assignment The student’s prime responsibility is to function as a clinician within the HU Dental Hygiene Clinic. If a patient breaks an appointment and the student cannot find another patient for treatment, the student checks with the assigned instructor for another clinical tasks, such as assisting a classmate in data collection or reviewing instrumentation a mounted typodont. Instruments and any personal items left in the clinic or cabinets are left at the student’s own risk. HU is not responsible for any personal for any personal items left behind in the Clinic. Jeopardizing Health No credit will be given if a student jeopardizes the health, welfare, or safety of the patient, themselves, a classmate, or clinical faculty. Any such instances will be reviewed on an individual basis and a decision will be made by the Program Director and University administration in conjunction with the faculty CLINICAL SESSIONS

to determine the appropriate course of action. Faculty will record the incident within the University’s Datatel system. Clinic and Reception Phones The clinic and reception telephones are not to be used for personal calls. However, students may use the clinic telephone to call their patients. When answering the clinic phone, students will use the greeting, “This is the HU Dental Hygiene Clinic, how may I assist you?”. Students are encouraged to use the Clinic phone to contact their patients. Doing this honors HIPAA and FERPA requirements to protect the student’s personal information as well as the patient’s personal information. Patient Appointments Students are responsible to acquire their own patients each clinical session. However, when patients call the clinic, they will be assigned to a student on a need for care basis. Students must check with the administrative assistant to review the appointment book on a daily basis.
