THE DENTAL HYGIENE PROCESS OF CARE

Outline of Patient Care • Ensure patient has completed all forms. • Escort patient to dental chair (only patient is allowed in the treatment area. No visitors, no children, no family members). • Have the patient swish for 60 seconds with antibacterial rinse. • Review medical and dental histories with patient. • Look up all prescription medications in Drug Reference Handbook and complete Medication Screen. • Take vitals. • Review Medical history and Medication screens with Clinic Dentist. Obtain approval to proceed by the clinic dentist. • First visit for the semester or recall, the clinic dentist must approve the medical history. • Subsequent visits must have the clinic dentist’s approval of the patient’s medical history only if there is a change. • Establish the need for radiographs. • Conduct a complete extra and intraoral inspection. • Complete dental charting. • Complete a gingival and periodontal assessment (full mouth probing 17 years or older) • Complete the calculus indices. • Determine the patient caries risk assessment. • Complete a dental hygiene care plan. • Notify the clinical instructor you are ready for a Check-In. • At check-in, introduce the patient to the dentist and instructor.

• After check-in, students may use disclosing solution, state gingiva plaque/indices, patient education followed by periodontal debridement. • Faculty and clinic dentist must agree on the need for topical and local anesthesia after evaluating the patient. • After debridement is checked by instructor, perform necessary polishing procedures • Polishing check-out with faculty. • Give fluoride treatment, if a part of the patient’s treatment plan. • The dental charting must be checked prior to dismissing the patient. Have a referral sheet to note the restorative check by the clinic dentist. • Provide post-operative care instructions by filling out and giving to patient as a memory aid. • Give the patient a Patient Survey form to fill out before leaving. • Escort the patient to the reception area for recare or reappointing to complete care.
