LifeGift’s 2024 Annual Report Partnerships Driving Transformation

Lance Black, MD, MBID LifeGift Board of Directors Chair Senior Associate Dean of Innovation & Strategic Projects, Texas A&M University

Kevin A. Myer, MSHA LifeGift President and CEO

Dear Friends,

LifeGift is honored to serve the mission of organ, eye and tissue donation through the generosity of donors and their families who offered hope this past year. Our teams helped coordinate the recovery of 471 organ donors, resulting in 1,394 organs transplanted and 87 organs recovered and used for research. In addition, LifeGift coordinated the recovery of tissue from 761 donors. As LifeGift looks to the future and works to expand hope, we’ve made significant progress in promoting diversity and inclusion in our mission to save lives through organ, eye and tissue donation. Central to this effort is our Multicultural Advisory Committee, a diverse group of LifeGift team members who provide valuable guidance and feedback. This committee plays a crucial role in strengthening our outreach and education efforts, ensuring we effectively engage the multicultural communities we serve. LifeGift is dedicated to adopting emerging research and new technologies. One example is LifeGift’s collaboration with Paragonix Technologies and its groundbreaking portable renal perfusion system, KidneyVault™, designed to perfuse a kidney and provide real-time insight on the preservation conditions of a kidney in transit between donor and recipient. The potential to perfuse donor kidneys in transit with real-time monitoring is an incredible advancement that can increase the availability of high- quality donor kidneys. The device allows us to provide our transplant center partners with recovered kidneys that have been perfused throughout the journey regardless of the transportation mode, while providing real-time insight on preservation temperature, pressure, and GPS location. Paragonix’s portable device provides the ability to transport via commercial aircraft significantly decreasing costs compared to charter flights. This will facilitate

broader sharing of machine-perfused kidneys and will result in greater use of recovered kidneys for transplant. This past year, LifeGift’s Institute for the Future of Transplantation Simulation Center (LIFT SIM Center) received Provisional Accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, becoming the nation’s first organ procurement organization to earn this recognition. To further LifeGift’s training efforts, the LIFT team welcomed its newest teaching tool, SAM, officially known as an “auscultation manikin.” Designed to elevate the training experience, SAM offers unparalleled capabilities that enhance the accuracy and depth of medical simulation. We also recognize the invaluable contributions of our dedicated partners who help facilitate the donation process. These include physicians, surgeons, nurses, critical care staff, funeral homes, coroners, medical examiners, first responders, community leaders, tissue processors, eye banks, donation advocates and many others. We owe the ultimate gratitude to our donors and their families – they’re the true heroes of our ever- expanding story, and we’re honored to help their legacies live on. We remain humbled and offer our sincerest thanks to all who offer support of Partnerships Driving Transformation.

With gratitude,

Lance Black, MD, MBID LifeGift Board of Directors Chair Senior Associate Dean of Innovation & Strategic Projects, Texas A&M University

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION IN ORGAN DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATION

LifeGift Among First to Use Pioneering Renal Perfusion System LifeGift was among the first to adopt Paragonix Technologies’ groundbreaking portable renal perfusion system, which preserves kidneys and provides real-time monitoring during transport. In a landmark effort last December, LifeGift participated in the successful transport of four donor kidneys to four separate medical institutions across the nation in a 24-hour period. With more than 104,000 patients on the transplant list—nearly 90,000 awaiting a kidney—this innovation has the potential to increase the availability of high-quality donor organs and improve transplant outcomes.* LifeGift and Houston Methodist Collaborate to Advance Organ Donation and Transplantation In response to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s call for an overhaul of the national organ donation system, LifeGift, in collaboration with Houston Methodist, launched the Deceased Organ Donation Performance Improvement Collaborative. Sponsored by Sanofi, this initiative brings together transplant centers within LifeGift’s service area and experts in organ procurement, transplantation, research and patient advocacy nationwide. The collaborative aims to address critical challenges, including the underutilization of donated

Committed to advancing clinical research and life-saving technologies, LifeGift recognizes the impact of real-time monitoring on kidney preservation. The device ensures optimal conditions during transport, regardless of the transportation mode, while also reducing costs by enabling commercial flight use instead of charter flights. This advancement facilitates broader sharing of machine-perfused kidneys, ultimately increasing the number of viable organs available for transplant. RESEARCH AND INNOVATION IN ORGAN DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATION

LifeGift and 34 Lives Celebrate Milestone Donor Kidney Rescue

Through collaboration with LifeGift and the transplant team at Duke University Hospital, this landmark transplant exemplifies the power of mission- driven partnerships in advancing kidney transplantation.

34 Lives, a Public Benefit Corporation dedicated to rescuing donor kidneys that might otherwise go unused, achieved a major milestone with its 34th successful kidney rescue and transplant on November 23, 2024. This accomplishment highlights the organization’s mission to reduce the number of viable kidneys—more than 8,000 in 2023—that go untransplanted despite a waiting list of nearly 100,000

A major boost to 34 Lives’ mission came in October 2024 with a $44 million ARPA-H Award for the “No Kidney Left Behind” project. This initiative aims to rehabilitate nearly 50% of discarded kidneys using advanced technologies such as normothermic machine perfusion, AI prediction tools and biomarker assessments. Operating from a hub in Indiana, the project could eventually expand to preserve other organs, including lungs and livers. LifeGift’s role as a designated partner reinforces its commitment to innovative solutions that increase organ availability and save lives. To read the press release, please click here.

patients. The number 34 holds special significance, symbolizing the daily loss of patients removed from the waitlist due to death or illness.

What problem are we solving?

In 2022, approximately 115,000 patients in the U.S. were awaiting organ transplants. Of these, 96,000 were waiting for a kidney. The average wait time for a kidney is 6 years, and during this time most patients will be on dialysis.

In 2022, over 7,800 kidneys were recovered with the intent to be transplanted but were unused.

In 2021, only 18,699 patients (18%) received kidney transplants while 13,292, approximately 34 per day, either died or became too sick to remain on the wait list. Source: 34Lives
