ROLE OF DIRECTOR OF ESTATES DEVELOPMENT

CANDIDATE PROFILE

• Experience of estates management and development in across campus environment compassing academic, education, health and/or research facilities. • Understanding and experience of working with JV development partners on the realisation of major capital developments. • Knowledge and experience of the student accommodation development market.

• Leading the planning and delivery of the UoS capital plan, which includes major projects and programmes in excess of £100m in capital value as well as minor and mid-sized capital projects from £100k to £20m in value. • Leading on strategic estate issues including option appraisal and feasibility analysis of development schemes and collaboration with development partners. • Leading the space management function to ensure efficient and appropriate use and development of space. • Property and asset management of University owned land and property. • Leading and management of the Estates Development team, including reviewing resources, team operating model and the professional development and capability of team members. • Deputising for the Executive Director of Estates & Facilities in the leadership and representation of the Estates & Facilities Director. • Any other duties as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the post holder.

Internal and external relationships Internal

Job purpose To set the vision and strategy of Estates Development at the University and to lead the delivery and implementation of strategy. The remit includes masterplanning, capital programme delivery, property asset management and space management, ensuring that the University has an estate that enables its vision and strategy, The postholder will also deputise for the Executive Director of Estates & Facilities in the leadership and representation of the wider Directorate. Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities • Leading a portfolio of teams spanning estates strategy development, capital projects planning and delivery, property asset management and space management. • Leadership of estates strategy development, estate masterplanning and capital planning. Contributing to wider Estates and Facilities strategy and sub-strategies as the Deputy Director.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience Essential • Skill level equivalent to achievement of a professional qualification or postgraduate degree in a relevant real estate / built environment discipline. • Proven leadership experience in a range of demanding and influential roles.

• University Executive Board, in particular the Senior Vice- President (Academic). • All members of Estates and Facilities. • All University departments, both academic and professional services. • Southampton University Student Union. • The University Council (governing body), members of Council, particularly lay members, and the relevant committees of Council, notably the Estates and Infrastructure Committee.

• Experience of leading a comparable scale capital

Planning and organising Essential

investment (£50m - £100m p.a.) programme in a relevant context (live, operational, high-footfall and diverse estate portfolio). • Experience of property and asset management across a diverse estate portfolio. • Experience of strategic planning in an estates environment including estates strategy, masterplanning and space management. Desirable • Membership of relevant professional body such as RICS, RIBA, ICE, Engineering Council etc.

• Able to champion and oversee the Department’s contribution to the university’s strategy and to lead on the Department’s strategies and plans. Problem solving and initiative Essential • Able to make judgements on significant new problems where precedent may not apply. • Able to develop innovative solutions and practical implementations for strategic change.

• PRINCE2 or similar project management qualification.
