I’LL NEVER BE FINISHED CHECKING THINGS OFF MY BUCKET LIST OVERCOMING LIMITATIONS

It’s often said that you must recognize and come to terms with your limitations before you can overcome and work through them. As many of you may recall, last month, my husband and I took a bucket-list trip to explore the beautiful wilderness in Montana, enjoy the mountains, pan for sapphires, go whitewater rafting, learn how to fly fish, try our hand at archery, and go ATVing. However, the highlight of our trip was an all-day cattle drive at a dude ranch. In years past, while preparing for this epic cattle drive, we would have had some vanity. However, this time, we had none. Instead of focusing on what the current style is or what outfit may look best for photos while on horseback, we were more concerned with preserving our bodies, making sure we didn’t get injured, and that the rest of our trip wasn’t ruined due to soreness or injury after this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

rashes. We invested in cycling shorts with padded butts, tough riding jeans, Anti Monkey Butt powder, and skin glide. We purchased cowboy boots and padded them with moleskin and wore them weeks before to break them in as best as we could. This cattle drive was the first excursion of our trip, and if we got hurt or injured, the rest of our trip would be over, so we were focused on making sure that didn’t happen! As our Montana trip got closer and closer, it became more apparent to me that a shift had recently taken place: We are now much more aware of our limitations as we age than in years prior. Instead of spontaneously jumping into situations, trips, and activities, we must take the extra time and precautions to protect ourselves from potential injuries. As my husband and I look to check more things off of our bucket list — visiting national parks, traveling across the country, and trying out new and fun activities — we are aware of our limitations and take the necessary precautions.

So, as we age, how do we get the most enjoyment out of our activities, and what fears may be preventing us from checking certain things off the bucket list? Will you always worry if that bum knee will bother you while you’re riding a horse for eight hours? Will the rest of your Montana trip be ruined because after the cattle drive, you can’t walk or have saddle sores? There’s much to be said for recognizing limitations, but in many cases, you don’t have to live with chronic or nagging pain. For example, with laser treatment, you can find some relief. As we age, everyone has some degree of physical limitations or some amount of arthritis, and the amount of pain and swelling it causes can vary greatly. However, having options such as laser treatments is beneficial for pain management to allow you to still enjoy life’s splendors and keep checking items off that bucket list. Age is a state of mind.

With These Home Spa Treatments It’s nice to treat yourself to a good spa day, but it can be costly. So instead, create the same treatments from the much-less-expensive comfort of your own home. Light some candles, grab your robe, and kick back with these home spa activities. Your Spa Space The best way to get the most out of your spa day is to set up your space to create a relaxing environment. Declutter the area you plan to relax in, grab your supplies so they’re on standby, light a few candles, and add some mood music. That way, it feels like a true spa room. Kick Back and Relax

At-Home Treatments Now that your spa room is set, it’s time to indulge in different treatments!

Oatmeal and Honey Facial Mask: These simple ingredients make for a wonderful face mask that leaves your skin super smooth and soft.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, mix 1/4 cup of water, 1/2 cup of uncooked oatmeal, 1/2 cup of milk, and 1 tbsp of pure honey, and cook for 5–6 minutes. Stir frequently, and when the time is up, remove

from heat and allow to cool. Massage a semi-thick layer of pure honey over your clean face and neck before applying the mask.

Apply the mask with upward strokes, lie back,

and relax for 15–20 minutes. You can remove the mask with warm water and a soft facial cloth!

Honey and Lemon Foot Soak: This moisturizing and antibacterial foot soak is the perfect remedy for a day on your feet.

All you need for this treatment is 1/2 cup of honey, 1–2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, and 1 lemon sliced into thin rounds. Don’t munch on sweets for the wrong reasons.

Keep in mind that what works for one person may not work for everyone. You are in charge of your own boundaries. The key is to be honest with yourself about your health, strength, challenges, and habits. Practice empowerment. It’s important to recognize that mindless eating gets the best of us. While watching TV or chatting away on the phone, you could down a large number of mini candy bars and not even realize it until you go to throw away the wrappers. However, if you sit down to purposefully enjoy your snack, it will be more controlled, and you won’t feel any guilt.

Like healthy fruits and veggies, we don’t eat candy and treats for their nutritional value (try finding minerals or vitamins in M&M’s and gummy bears!). We indulge simply for pleasure. So, when choosing your treats, don’t opt for one “just because” it’s there — instead, choose the indulgence that you actually want.

Set boundaries for yourself and stick to them.

When you’ve tried to lose or maintain your weight in the past, what has worked on special occasions and what hasn’t? If you notice a pattern, it’s time to set a plan to do things differently this Halloween. Here’s the thing: Unless you give the candy away or throw it out, it won’t be gone after just one night. If you have a history of only eating one piece of your Halloween stash each day but gained a few pounds as a result, you may want to modify your plan this year and allow yourself only five pieces in total. Maybe your kids can enjoy the rest or you can give it away — your office might love it if you share.

Don’t let your treats play tricks on you. You are in control.

This Halloween, be sure to allow yourself the opportunity to enjoy a treat or two. You deserve it, and as long as you intentionally set boundaries, this won’t derail your diet and health goals.

Enjoying Halloween Candy With Health in Mind

Enjoy Halloween Candy While Maintaining Your Health Trick or Treat Fall has arrived and Halloween is just around the corner! So, bring on the pumpkin spice lattes, apple pie, fall activities, and hot apple cider. Halloween kicks off our holiday season and brings along lots of yummy sweets and treats, but it’s important to keep in mind that there’s always a time, place, and amount that is suitable for indulgences — and we aren’t just talking about being conscious of our waistlines. It’s important to remember that too many sugars and carbs can negatively affect your teeth, blood pressure, mental well-being, energy, and skin. Halloween is all about the candy and trick-or-treaters, and as long as you are in good health, it’s okay to allow a special spot for decadence in your normal diet. This Halloween, follow these three rules to enjoy your favorite candy, keep your health on track, and have a good time. After all, the spooky season only arrives once a year.
