Teacher-Planned Curriculum History: As old as adult classes and still very much alive. Characteristics: Teacher (or class) decides what book of Bible will be studied next. Advantages: Class or teacher may select and study Bible book of spe cial interest to the group. Teacher may cover as much or as little of the Scripture as is convenient. Disadvantages: Makes for spotty coverage of Bible, much time spent on short portions, none on others. Encourages teacher to ride his “hob by”—prophecy, eschatology, sepa ration, etc. Provides no study helps for members of the class, hence dis courages lesson preparation. Limits many teachers with small libraries to two or three sources of reference material. Individual lessons lack unity and objective; tend to degen erate into rambling verse-by-verse exegesis. Encourages sparse use of illustrative material by teacher and sometimes, little practical applica tion. Summary There are other types of curric ula, such as the study of some spe cial subject for a limited time, but the above are the basic varieties. It would appear that “graded” ma terial of one kind or another best meets the needs of most men and women. It is unfortunate that some teach ers of adults are reluctant to use a quarterly in preparing their lessons. They fail to understand that use of lesson helps does not in any way in dicate inadequacy on the part of a teacher nor is it belittling to his ability as a student of the Word. It merely provides him with ready access to the fruits of the studies of others, and it is especially helpful in the broader aspects of a curric ulum. To follow a planned course of study gives a class a sense of progress, even though the teacher may feel unduly hurried at times and may be unable to linger on his favorite portions or to develop his favorite “hobbies.” There seems to he little doubt hut that a planned curriculum, laid out with definite objectives and the specific needs of men and women in mind, is help ful in attracting men and women to an adult Bible class and in hold ing their interest. (To be concluded, next month.)
