Make sure the pins respond to the magnet’s pull. (Soak three of the matches in water and insert the pins in the stub ends. Allow these matches to be in contact for several hours with one certain, prong of the magnet, pointing the heads toward the other prong. Mark the prongs so as to be sure to use them the same way when teaching the lesson. Bend 12 of the matches close to the head until the heads are almost broken off, and then straighten them so that the break will not be noticeable.) LESSON: If you were choosing soldiers for the army, what kind of a test would you give them? Most generals want men with strong bodies and alert minds. Gideon, one of the judges for the children of Israel, was choos ing soldiers for the army and the Lord told him to do some very strange things —-- at least men in the army to day would think them strange. LESSON: Which of these needles do you think is the stronger? “The largest one, of course.” Don’t be too sure until they have been tested. The larger one reminds me of a man and the other of a wom an. We are accustomed to think that men are stronger than women, but in many ways this is not true. We will test the needles to see which is the stronger. Here is a pile of smaller needles. I place the largest needle on the pile and nothing hap pens. When I place th e s ma l l e r needle on the pile, it lifts many from the pile. In this case, the smaller one is the stronger. Would you like to know why the smaller needle is the stronger? It is because it has been in contact with this large magnet. While in contact with the magnet, it took some of the magnet’s power. In looking at this strong needle, I am reminded of some of the women of the Bible. In Judges 4, we are told of a woman named Deborah. She be came a great judge, and through her God delivered the children of Israel in battle. Before she became a judge, she was a prophetess and was in touch with God. From God she received wis dom and strength to lead the children of Israel. There were men in Debo

First, Gideon was told to ask who among the soldiers was afraid. Those who said that they were afraid were counted out — 22,000 of them. I have several matches in my hand. Some of them will nod their heads like the fearful Israelites. Twelve of them nodded their heads and became use less. (The heads will now fall off when slightly rubbed with the hand, having been previously broken.) The Lord told Gideon to send the fearful home as they could not be used. There were still too many in Gide on’s army so the Lord ordered another test. Gideon was told to take the re maining 10,000 down to the water to drink.
