TERRY FOX RUN ATTRACTS HUNDREDS
Some walked or run for Terry Fox, while others did so in order to commemorate or honour someone close to them who was affected by cancer. Hundreds of participants laced up their running shoes on September 15 in order to take part in the 39 th edition of the Terry Fox Run. Locally, the event was held in Embrun and Russell. “We had 140 participants and 30 volunteers,” said Russell event organizer and Russell township councillor Cindy Saucier. “That’s less than last year.” Saucier expressed disappointment that the RBC Run for Kids was held on the very same day in Ottawa. “I feel discouraged that certain organizations would organize their run on the same day as the Terry Fox run,” she stated. “It takes away from Terry’s legacy.” In all, the event raised $9031 for cancer research, an amount that will increase in the coming weeks, as local schools organize their own Terry Fox events. Plusieurs résidents de la région ont pris part à la 39 e édition de la journée Terry Fox, qui avait lieu à Embrun et à Russell, le 15 septembre dernier. « L’esprit de Terry Fox continue à vivre au sein de la communauté, disait Donna Lafrance, organisatrice de l’évènement d’Embrun. Aujourd’hui, nous consacrons la marche non seulement à Terry, mais aussi à Rebecca Smith et Danita Ostland, deux survivantes du cancer. » Le maire de Russell, Pierre Leroux, a pris part à la course.
