Sam Struss named head women ’ s lacrosse coach

Mercyhurst Director of Athletics Brad Davis announced Sam Struss as the sixth head coach in Mercyhurst women’s lacrosse history on July 9, 2021. “We are thrilled to announce the hiring of Sam Struss to be the next leader of our women’s lacrosse program,” Davis said. “Her passion, energy, and determination to take over this program really stood out after a nationwide search.” Struss, a 2015 graduate of Liberty University, has spent the last three seasons with the Lakers as the assistant coach focusing on the ofensive side of the feld where she has helped to coach one First Team All- American, fve All-Region, and eight All-Conference selections. Struss also assisted in player recruitment as well as organizing all aspects of travel, team camps, served as the assistant coach and ofensive coordinator for fellow Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference institution Seton Hill University for two seasons. While with the Grifns, she helped to design and implement the ofensive strategy in addition to aiding in player recruitment and player development. “She clearly demonstrated her vision for the program, and how she will work tirelessly to form meaningful relationships with our student-athletes both on and of the feld. future Lakers about where this program is heading,” Davis said. “I would frst like to thank my family for their endless support,” said Struss. “In addition, I would like to thank Brad Davis, Andy Simon-Wambach, the entire athletic administration, and everyone else who was part of the search committee for ofering me the opportunity to serve as the next head coach of the Mercyhurst women’s lacrosse program.” Before venturing into the coaching ranks, Struss was a four-year Division I scholarship athlete at Liberty University where she played 73 games, making 68 starts. Over her career with the Flames, she totaled 108 goals and 55 assists. She also led the team in points during her sophomore (2013) and junior (2014) campaigns. “I have had the pleasure of serving Mercyhurst University and this program over the past three years as the assistant coach,” said Struss. “In that time, I have truly fallen in love with everything Mercyhurst stands for. I am also grateful for the opportunity to continue working with this group of exceptional young women. There is nothing that I want more than to see these players reach their highest potential both on and of the feld and to grow into amazing adults. It is an honor to be here, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds.”
