In Memoriam Mercyhurst mourns Water Polo Coach Curtis Robinette
On Aug. 14, 2021, Mercyhurst lost a beloved member of its community with the passing of Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Coach Curtis Robinette. Robinette, 41, was admired by many and had an overwhelming drive to guide his student-athletes toward success, both in athletics and in life. In the words of Mercyhurst colleague and friend Travis Lindahl, “Curtis spent the last 19 years of his life dedicated to two things: his family and Mercyhurst Water Polo. As the coach of both the men’s and women’s water polo teams, Curtis amassed more than 400 victories, several coach-of-the-year honors, and numerous conference championships. In addition to the trail of athletic successes he left in his wake, Curtis will long be remembered as a beloved mentor to more than 200 players who jumped in the pool for Mercyhurst.” A native of Maumee, Ohio, Robinette graduated from Slippery Rock University in 2002, a four-year varsity player and two-year captain in water polo. He came to Mercyhurst to coach the men’s team in 2002 and took over the women’s team in 2003.
Over the years, he earned several coaching honors, the ConferencneamedhimCoachoftheYear.Thisspringt, f ir st Curtis Robinette Memorial Invitational in honor of t ons, Owen and Finn, and a daughter, Poppy.
