General Women’s Union Guardians of Heritage

The title “Guardians of Heritage” is bestowed by the General Women’s Union upon creative Emirati women who have effectively preserved national heritage, passing it down through generations while promoting the Emirati identity and traditional crafts globally. The General Women’s Union was established on August 27, 1975, in alignment with the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul. He emphasized the necessity of consolidating efforts for women’s empowerment from the onset of his rulership. The union was formed to unite women’s associations across the country under one entity, serving as the national mechanism dedicated to empowering and leading women in the UAE. It functions as an umbrella organization that supports women’s movements and directs their efforts towards addressing women’s issues and concerns in local, regional, and international forums.
