Al Khous (palm fronds weaving)

Al Khous is an ancient handicraft practiced by women across various regions of the United Arab Emirates. This traditional craft was highly esteemed in the past, serving essential purposes in daily life such as for household items, transportation, and decoration. Tools were fashioned and hand-woven from palm fronds. Woven fronds were traditionally used in making roofs, mats, utensils, and brushes. Dry palm fronds are collected, cut, and washed before undergoing the weaving process. Fronds can also be naturally dyed in various colors such as purple, green, and red. The process of al khous begins with the collection of palm fronds, followed by sorting and selecting the best leaves. These are then soaked briefly in water to soften their rough texture, making them pliable and easy to shape as needed. Various products are crafted from al khous, including: Al Majaba (cone shaped food cover) – Al Haseer (mat) – Al Mikhrafa (basket) – Saroud (table mat) – Al Mahaffa (handheld fan).
