The Spring Lake Beer Garden
BY MATTHEW BREEN
The atmosphere on race day feels like a classic small-town celebration, straight out of a movie. Runners stroll in, locals show up to reconnect, and everyone’s outside enjoying the DJ, a slice from Spring Lake Pizzeria, and a cold beer for five bucks. SIMPLE AND SOLID SELECTION There’s nothing flashy about it, and that’s part of the charm. As one of the organizers put it, “It’s such a joy seeing everyone, especially the kids you used to see around town, now all grown up and coming back with their parents and friends.”
Beer-wise, there’s always something for everyone. Mark Farrell handles the selections and keeps it simple but solid. Expect a mix of one national beer (Land Shark and Michelob Ultra are staples), plus two rotating IPAs with at least one from a local brewery. There’s also an alcoholic seltzer option for non-beer drinkers and water. A VOLUNTEER EFFORT The event is run by the Spring Lake BID and an all-volunteer crew, including board members and local friends who get pulled in each year to help out. One local distributor provides the beer truck
If you’re running the Spring Lake 5, or just coming to watch, you might want to carve out time after the race to check out one of the best parts of the day: the Spring Lake Beer Garden. A BUDDING TRADITION The Beer Garden began in 2022, and it is quickly becoming a staple post-race event. With over 12,000 runners in town, the goal was to bring people downtown to shop, hang out, and grab a drink. Thanks to the efforts of Anita Kruse, Mark Farrell, and the Spring Lake Business Improvement District (BID), it worked, and then some.
shirt sales help fund downtown projects and community events. If you got the chance to see the wreaths and lamppost decorations this past Christmas, that was funded through the Beer Garden. WHAT TO EXPECT Located at the corner of Jersey and Third Avenue, the Beer Garden goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the Spring Lake sidewalk sale. Last call is at 3:30 p.m., but if you show up late, you will wish you came earlier. If it’s your first time coming, here’s what to expect: You’ll check in at the
entrance where volunteers will check IDs (21+ only), then you can buy your drink tickets and grab a t-shirt if you want one. After that, you’re in. It’s all about music, friends, and simple good vibes. One thing to keep in mind: With all the cell phones being used on race day, credit card machines can be unreliable, so you can’t go wrong by bringing cash. Whether you’re a runner, a local, or just passing by, the Spring Lake Beer Garden is worth a stop. It’s more than just a place to grab a drink, it has become a Spring Lake Tradition.
and supplies, and Spring Lake Pizzeria is usually on hand slinging slices.
SUPPORTING DOWNTOWN One of the coolest things to come out of the Beer Garden has been the t-shirts. Originally made for volunteers, the shirts became so popular that they started selling them in 2023 and have sold out both years since. A new mascot design is in the works for this year! In 2023, the event added sponsorships, with local businesses displaying banners along the Beer Garden fence. Proceeds from beer and

She hopes to be able to build a school, church, library, dormitory, and health clinic in the future. Mission works to sponsor over 100 children and feed 1000 children twice a day. This progress is all possible because of the support and fundraising St. Catherine’s School, Parish families, and The Brian Kelly Foundation have provided.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS
Preserving the Spring Lake 5 Through the craziness of raising a family and running a business, Chip and Andrea saw the Spring Lake 5 at a crossroads in the early 2000s when prior race leadership let the town know after 15 years, they could no longer organize the run. “We both agreed. The race was too special an event for the town for it to end,” Chip recalls. Together, with a group of friends, they took on the task of learning the inner workings of the race. They changed the race to a non-profit status, formed the Friends of the Spring Lake 5, and ensured the race’s continuity and its ability to support local causes. One of the nonprofits that has benefited meaningfully from the race is Interfaith Neighbors, a community-rooted organization based in Asbury Park, where Chip now serves as Executive Director. At the time, it was only the beginning of their connection to Interfaith. A seed was planted that would grow into something transformative. Heartbreak & Healing Before that next chapter began, the Craigs endured a heartbreak no family should face when their son Kyle passed away after his junior year of college. The loss was devastating. “The way our friends and the town came together and responded when Kyle died was remarkable,” Andrea reflects. Their friends, family, and faith carried them through the darkest moments. Through the Craigs’ close knit community and their commitment to building something for the greater good, Chip and Andrea deepened their connection to the community as they slowly started to heal. Alongside the support they received, the Craigs channeled their energy into a commitment to the Minding Your Mind organization, a non-profit whose mission is to remove the stigma and destructive behaviors associated with mental health issues. To this day, along with many of Kyle’s friends, they work to change the narrative and educate others about the importance of mental health. Soon after, Andrea transitioned from the board at the Spring Lake Library to becoming the assistant director using her skills as a former art director to develop programming, marketing, and creating lasting bonds with visitors. Chip, meanwhile, stepped into a larger role with Interfaith Neighbors. Having first encountered the organization through the Spring Lake 5, Chip was drawn to its mission to build stronger communities. “Joe Mamora, the founder of Interfaith Neighbors, was a tremendous man. He was instrumental in getting me involved, keeping me connected, and then opening the door for me to become a leader within Interfaith.” Interfaith Neighbors Founded 38 years ago by Joe Mamora with a mission to prevent homelessness, Interfaith launched its first program, Rental & Mortgage Assistance, to keep people in their homes and stabilize their futures. Joe Marmora knew Chip was someone who could build on the foundation he laid at Interfaith Neighbors. Meanwhile, Chip’s faith guided him in recognizing that the comfort he received in

in Connecticut, Andrea noticed Chip would be out of sorts each spring. “The Sound just isn’t the ocean,” he told Andrea. A weekend trip to Spring Lake changed everything. That weekend they decided Spring Lake would become home, and they poured themselves into it. Andrea took the reins of designing their home, using her artistic abilities and knack for design to make it their favorite place and build their family. Raising a Family Andrea and Chip raised three children. “The ocean was always a draw for us, and it was no different for our children. The boys were always surfing, and our daughter was our water baby.” They remember fondly the kids working at The Breakers and caddying at the Spring Lake Golf Club, with their summers anchored by beach days and patio hangouts. “Patio to the beach and beach back to the patio,” Andrea laughs, “that’s the beaten path.”
Chip and Andrea Craig embody what it means to build things that last. Their story is one of dedication. Dedication to each other, their family and friends, and to the meaningful organizations in and around the community they love. For over 25 years, they have immersed themselves into projects that will create a lasting impact in Spring Lake and beyond. A Desire to Build Chip began his career as an attorney in corporate finance, but after four years, he chose another path.. “I wanted to be on the other side, where instead of just doing the transactions, you stay with a company to help build it and watch it grow.” That desire to build has guided him ever since. The ocean was always a draw for Andrea and Chip. Andrea grew up in a beach town on the eastern shore of Maryland while Chip grew up 30 miles west of Spring Lake, and recalls “always wanting to get to the coast.” After they were married and living

Interfaith Neighbors’ Comprehensive Programming
Interfaith’s programs are essential, and that requires a broad base of support from neighbors who care. Each initiative is rooted in a holistic approach and simple belief: when people are given the right support, they thrive, and so do their communities. Whether you donate, volunteer, host information gatherings at your home, or simply learn more, your involvement can help build the networth of people helping people to build resilience, restore dignity, and plant seeds for sustainable change.

his family’s time of need, in turn would allow him to comfort others in need of support. With Andrea’s blessing and encouragement, Chip stepped away from his prior work of 35 years and into the role of Co- Executive director and Chief Business Officer. “Andrea was the support I needed to help me make the transition from the stressful life of my business and step into spending every day at Interfaith.” Building A Lasting Community Since then, Interfaith’s mission has grown to reflect a broader understanding of what it means for a community to thrive. Housing is still foundational, but the organization has expanded to address a broad range of “social determinants of health.” Chip’s leadership, with the help of many, has enabled the organization to expand into eight core programs addressing affordable housing, food security, job training, early childhood education, and more. The comprehensive programming recognizes the deeper needs behind each individual’s circumstance. “It’s not just about keeping people housed,” Chip says. “It’s about giving people the support they need to build something better.” Interfaith Neighbors is powered by local families, businesses, and volunteers who give their time, expertise, and resources to support its mission. Nick & Sons donates bread weekly, Faherty Brand has donated large amounts of new clothing, and The Sak has done a backpack drive. Chip noted that local individual
• Community Engagement - Fosters connections between residents, services, and initiatives through outreach and partnerships. Rooted in community voices, it drives revitalization efforts like murals and the Springwood Ave Heritage Walk, honoring Asbury Park’s Black history through collaboration and storytelling. “Many people don’t fully recognize the homeless issue in Monmouth County, but it’s as serious today as it was 38 years ago,” Chip explains. “Once people take time to learn and think about it, you can’t ignore it.” Chip would love to hear from you to help share Interfaith’s work. donors have helped fund certification programs, career training, put fresh produce on a family’s table, and even entire housing developments. Interfaith is truly a place where local action transforms lives. A Foundation Meant to Endure For Chip, everything he’s learned in business, in family, and in faith has led to the opportunity to build a lasting, self-sustaining organization that strengthens the entire community. “My job is to make sure I leave it better for the next leaders,” he says. When reflecting on their work, whether it’s the Spring Lake 5, the library, or Interfaith, Chip and Andrea put it simply “It’s about joining with people who are similarly motivated, with a mindset of positivity and curiosity, and making small changes that can add up to meaningful ones.” For the Craigs, their legacy is not a personal one, but rather in the organizations they’ve helped to shape and the communities they’ve helped strengthen. At the heart of it all, Chip says, is Andrea. “The key is a solid partner, and Andrea is my inspiration. I bring that inspiration with me every day.” In everything they build, the Craigs are careful to make sure it can endure. Together, Chip and Andrea have built more than homes or programs or events. They’ve built something deeper: connection, trust, and hope that can be passed on. Because that’s how you build any community. You lay a foundation, nurture the growth, and ensure the next generation can carry it forward.
