Making the Most of the Holidays WE CAN STAY SAFE AND STILL CELEBRATE

We’ve made it to the last month of 2020! What a wild year it’s been, and the holiday season may be just the thing we all need to cap off a rough year and head into 2021 with some renewed vigor. Even though I’m an advocate for finding ways to celebrate, it’s so important to remember that just because we’re leaving 2020 behind doesn’t mean our troubles are going to stay behind along with it. Now more than ever, it’s important to pay attention to our health and keep ourselves and our loved ones safe by having a good time and playing this season smart. Here in our office we’ve always loved celebrating Christmas and other winter holidays together. We have a varied staff that observes and celebrates a multitude of wonderful and fascinating holiday customs, and we love participating in them together. Every year, we bring everyone together to celebrate all the hard work and achievements accomplished no matter what our different backgrounds or home celebrations may look like because, ultimately, this is a time to celebrate being an incredible team. Although we’ve gone big with our celebrations in the past, this year we’ll safely tone it down with a nice lunch, more pie than we can eat, and perhaps a little gift exchange to show one another we care. We’ll probably head out of the office nice and early to get a jump start on our home festivities, too. Our celebrations will be quiet but no less meaningful than any other year. Even though we’re encouraging our team, their families, and our clients to avoid going out and gathering in large groups as much as possible, we’re also urging each other to still find ways to celebrate this year and make the season meaningful. The holidays are meant to be a time for us to show gratitude for those things in our life that are most important. Even though holiday plans and traditions will likely look different for many, we still have an opportunity to make them special. We even have some great ideas for how to do just that on the inside of this newsletter. But most importantly, we should all use this time to remember to never take things for granted because you never know what the future holds. In the area we serve, coronavirus numbers are skyrocketing, just like everywhere else. We couldn’t have predicted that would be the case when things first started at the beginning of the year, yet here we are. We must be vigilant in our effort

to keep safe by wearing masks, distancing appropriately, and sanitizing belongings and areas as needed. But we also have to be vigilant in our efforts to not let the world around us bring us down and keep us down. So, if you have family and friends who are safe to see for the holidays, make some time to spend with them. If it’s going to be just a quiet gathering at home, plan some activities you’ve never done before to make it a memorable one. All traditions start somewhere, and this could be a great time to invent a new one with your loved ones. As we get ready to head into a new year, Malloy Law Offices, LLC is looking forward to the future. We’re ready and excited to keep serving our clients and standing alongside them as they face life’s challenges. It’s been a long year, but we’ve arrived at the end of it stronger than before. We can make 2021 a fantastic year by continuing to work hard and being there for each other.

From our entire team, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season and wonderful new year.

ARE YOU READY FOR WINTER DRIVING?

What do Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga, Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, and Khloé Kardashian have in common? Yes, they’re all high-profile celebrities, of course, but they’re also big fans of hot tea. According to the entertainment website Yaay, Angelina Jolie likes to make her own garlic tea by steeping fresh cloves in hot water, and Lady Gaga is such a big tea lover that she takes a tea set with her on tour. These famous women might be onto a health and beauty secret because aside from being delicious, tea is a great way to boost your immune system and fend off illnesses. Drinking hot tea, or another immune-boosting drink in place of hot chocolate, will still give you the cozy winter vibes you crave without compromising your health. An easy drink for beginners is lemon-ginger With These 3 Hot Winter Drinks BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM LIKE A CELEBRITY

3 TIPS TO KEEP YOU FROM BEING A SCARY STATISTIC

The holiday season is usually a big time for travel, and even though we’re encouraging clients to stay home as much as possible this year, there are going to be essential times you’ll have to jump in your car and get on the road. The number of car accidents tends to increase during this time of year, so make sure you follow these recommended precautions. DO PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE You should always make sure your car is taken care of. Keep up its regular service, and get it checked out before the winter season really hits or before you take it on a long road trip. Keep track of the manufacturer’s recommendations as well as your mileage so you know when it’s due for certain services. Pay special attention to the traction of your tires, and rotate them if needed. Use snow tires as necessary; get belts, hoses, and batteries checked; top off your fluids; and always carry an emergency kit in your car. GET SOME REST Always make sure you’re adequately rested up before getting behind the wheel. People often forget about the importance of sleeping well before driving long distances, and according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic safety, drowsy drivers account

tea , which is a spin-off of Khloé Kardashian’s favorite drink. Ginger is a key ingredient here because it’s anti-inflammatory, raises the immune system, and may even help fight cancer. You can make lemon-ginger syrup by layering lemon slices, fresh ginger, and raw honey in a jar and letting it sit in the fridge overnight. The next morning, just add a few spoonfuls of the concoction to your hot water and you’ll have instant tea!

Homemade chai tea is another delicious option that will wow you and your guests this winter. There are thousands of chai recipes out there, but MinimalistBaker.com offers a simple and tasty one that’s made with cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger, black tea, pepper, and dairy-free milk. If you don’t want to grind the spices yourself, you can buy a premade blend. Chai gives you all of the ginger benefits with the added bonus of cardamom, which is said to have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Last but not least, if you’re more of a latte drinker than a tea drinker, try golden milk ! This soothing drink is a darling of health food fanatics because it features honey (a disease-fighting powerhouse ingredient) and turmeric (an immune- booster that lowers cholesterol, combats arthritis, and helps prevent cancer). WellPlated.com offers a delicious recipe that pairs those two ingredients with almond milk, almond butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and ginger for a satisfying nightcap.

for 20% of fatal car crashes each year in the U.S. In addition to getting sleep, make sure a trusted adult is in the passenger seat who can be responsible for keeping the driver aware of conditions, highway alerts, and directions. They should also be an active companion for the driver during the trip to help them stay alert and focused. BUCKLE UP According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, only 80% of adult passengers in the back seat of cars remember to buckle up. But if an accident happens when passengers sitting anywhere in the car aren’t wearing a seatbelt, there’s a much greater risk for fatal injury. It’s so important to make sure

any young passengers in your car are buckled at all times, and double-check that you’re buckled, too, no matter where you’re sitting. Many winter driving statistics available can give you a true (and sometimes

Perusing a list of federal laws may read like a yearbook of crime history. Bills introduced in Congress are often named after the victims of horrific crimes, greed, and exploitation to honor those victims. Below are three such laws. Each has made a lasting impression on society and culture. THE ADAM WALSH CHILD PROTECTION AND SAFETY ACT The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act was signed in 2006 — 25 years after 6-year-old Adam Walsh was abducted from a Florida shopping mall. Adam’s body was found 16 days later, and his father’s reaction to his son’s horrific death impacted generations of victims. His father, John Walsh, went on to create the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and hosted the popular TV show “America’s Most Wanted” for 23 years. The act created a three- tiered categorization for sex offenders, designated requirements for registering as a sex offender, and included a provision that requires offenders to report their whereabouts. THE MUHAMMAD ALI BOXING REFORM ACT Boxing is a tradition that stretches back to the early Egyptians, but it wasn’t until 1999 that Congress took action to protect these heavyweight fighters from greed and exhaustion. The Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act — known as the Ali Act — sought to protect boxers from promoters who took advantage of sports bets to make a quick buck. Experts identified many unethical business practices that put boxers in danger and stripped them of their rights to payment. The act was signed into law on May 26, 2000. Though it bears the name of famed boxer Muhammad Ali, there are no explicit ties to him, but the boxer did fervently support the bill in Congress. KARI’S LAW In 2013, Kari Hunt Dunn was killed by her estranged husband in a hotel room in Texas. Her daughter, who witnessed the event, knew to call 911 but was unaware that she had to dial 9 first to make an outbound call. Kari’s parents sought to change that by advocating for Kari’s Law, which was introduced in the Texas legislature in 2015. The law was signed into effect nationwide in 2018. It mandates that hotels, businesses, and other multi-line phone operating systems can no longer require dialing a 9, or any other number, prior to making a 911 call.

Make It a Happy Holiday 5 IDEAS FOR SAFE FAMILY CELEBRATIONS

Swap stories around the fire. There’s nothing like a crackling fireplace in winter, but if you want to bring some extra flair to it, create fire-time activities

COVID-19 has changed many things, but it doesn’t have to change the way we feel about the holiday season! Here are five unique ideas for celebrating with your family safely at home and perhaps creating some new traditions. Have a Zoom holiday recipe party. Cooking together is a cherished holiday tradition. If you won’t be gathering with extended family this year, video apps like Zoom are great options for still spending time with one another safely. Call your family members from the kitchen, and you can all work on following the same recipe, then see whose turns out the best. Host an outdoor gift swap. Spend time safely outdoors with friends and family by inviting people to gather on your front lawn for a gift exchange or white elephant game. Just remember to require attendees to wear masks, wash hands, and safely distance while opening gifts. Provide some disposable cups of hot chocolate to help your guests fight the chill, too. Craft an indoor snowball fight. If you’re up for getting a little crafty, you can create a fun new tradition your kids will love. By crafting fake snowballs out of nylon and stuffing, you can set up an indoor snowball fight for the whole family to participate in and help fight the boredom of staying cooped up indoors this season.

all members of your family can participate in. Take turns sharing the story of your favorite moment that year, talk about what your goals are for the new year, or read to each other from a favorite book. Have a holiday scavenger hunt. This is a way to get the kids excited about the season. Create a series of holiday riddles or poems for your kids to decipher, each one leading to clues that ultimately reveal the location of a gift. You can send them around the house, to the backyard and front yard, or even to a neighbor's house you know is safe and wants to play along, too!

The holiday season is what we make of it, so get creative, spread some cheer, and have a happy holiday!
