CELEBRATING SIBLINGS

A SHOUTOUT TO MY SISTERS

VIP Referral Patient of the Month!

LETITIA MIELE

The best compliment we can receive is to have one of our patients refer a friend or family member to our practice. If you refer someone and we are able to take them as a patient, both you and the person who was referred will be entered to Win a $25 gift card! It’s just our way of saying

Everyone is familiar with Mother’s and Father’s Days, but did you know there’s a Sibling’s Day this month? I sure didn’t, but apparently it’s become more popular thanks to social media, and I’m okay with that. It’s great seeing people share their love and adoration for their brothers and sisters out there. In fact, I want to get in on the fun. My younger sister is a great physical therapist practicing in Pennsylvania. I guess the industry just runs in the family. However, she took a slightly different track than me, getting more into the neurological side of PT. She’s always been great at research, so that technical side of the field really spoke to her. It’s great to be able to have perspectives from our two practices — we’re often able to bounce ideas off each other in ways many of our colleagues just don’t get the opportunity to do. Honestly this relationship we enjoy today just feels like a continuation from when we were kids. We were always a tightknit duo, trying our best to have each other’s backs. We even went to the same undergrad school together — she came in as a freshman just as I was an outgoing senior, but I was able to introduce her to plenty of friends and show her the ropes before I graduated. Being as close as we are, I suppose it’s not much of a surprise that my sister and I both went into the same field. We were extremely into sports as kids, which is how most people are exposed to physical therapy early on. But for my sister, the roots of how she got into the field are a little more personal. She’d had a bad injury while cheerleading, and PT treatment proved vital to

her recovery. I think it’s admirable that she took that experience and carried it forward to help others.

Of course, I do have another sister I want to shout out, too. I’ve known my sister-in-law since I was 16 years old, so we practically grew up together. In a very real way, she feels like a sibling, not just an “in-law,” and I’m grateful for that. As someone who came from a small family, I’m always humbled by how welcome my wife’s family has made me feel. I’m privileged to have gotten to know them over many, many years. And now my kids get to enjoy the same sort of relationship. My sister-in-law is very close to our children, who love getting to spend time with their aunt. Having our extended family close at hand really is a blessing. Speaking of the kids, my daughter’s turning 15 in June. I can hardly believe it, but she’s definitely showing a lot of maturity already. Her patience with her younger brother has definitely grown by leaps and bounds. It’s really touching seeing the two of them interact and grow to treat each other with care and respect. It reminds me of when my sister and I were that age. I can already tell they’re going to have a truly lasting relationship.

Thank You!

Here’s to family,

Finding Motivation on Those Tough Days

“I don’t know how to thank Dave and his team. A fall/ injury and two surgeries on my elbow led to shoulder pain. Dave was as committed to my getting better as I was. He was determined to find new ways to get me a better range of motion and tried different methods and brought other tools my doctors hadn’t thought of. I am now back to doing everything I want to do.” –Gail S.

Top Mental Strategies for Your Fitness Routine

Whether your New Year’s workout routine is finally embedded in your schedule or you’re still trying to make it happen, always remember that your mind is just as important as your body. On some days, you may feel like anything is possible, and on others, it may feel impossible to even get out of bed. Don’t worry, that’s totally normal! There’s no reason to feel ashamed if you’re struggling with gaining steam and motivation for your workout. Here are some mental strategies to help you get firmly into your routine this year and the years to come. GETTING TO THE GYM What’s the hardest part of working out? For most people, it’s not the heavy weights or the long cardio sessions — it’s actually stepping into the gym. Sometimes, people will wake up and think the gym isn’t possible that day as they lay in bed. Some people will psych themselves out of working out because their time is limited, or they worry about how tired they’ll be after the workout (especially after or before a busy day). Instead of thinking of reasons you can’t or don’t want to go, focus your mind only on the task of getting there. Stepping into the gym will often give you the mental push to actually work out. It’s also best to leave the all-or-nothing mindset behind — a 45- or 55-minute workout isn’t required every single gym session. Life happens, and even if it’s a short exercise, your workout will actually energize you for the rest of your day. PUSHING YOURSELF TO THE LIMIT Studies have found that the most successful people share grit: the ability to work hard and endure even the most difficult times. Workouts will burn, and the motions may feel uncomfortable or even painful, so it’s crucial to have the grit to push yourself to the limit. Rather than give up, you should embrace the pain and see it as a sign you’re growing stronger. Adjust your inner vocabulary. Anything that seems “uncomfortable” should be reconsidered as “intense” but something you can work through. Of course, be careful of injury pains!

“I came here because my lower back was hurting, and I knew that Dave was someone who could help me. That’s because a few years ago I had a pretty bad tib/fib fracture and Cornerstone whipped it back into shape. Thank you everyone for making me feel welcomed and better.” – Jessica P.

3 PHYSICAL THERAPY FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW Most people’s first introduction to the world of physical therapy is through sports or rehabilitation. It’s just not as glamorized or widely covered in the media as other areas of medicine, meaning there’s a lot the average person doesn’t know about the practice. Here are just a few fun facts about physical therapy. PHYSICAL THERAPY IS MORE

IMPORTANT NOW THAN EVER Due to our increasingly sedentary lives, issues like back pain have become widespread. Sadly, this is part of what fed the opioid crisis, as many people were prescribed powerful, addictive painkillers.

IT’S ANCIENT Historical records show that many of the physical therapy practices we rely on today have been used to heal people for a long, long time. Even Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician, relied on hydrotherapy and massage to help his patients. When it comes to easing pain and healing the body, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

WOMEN PLAYED A FOUNDATIONAL ROLE

The foundations of physical therapy in the United States can be traced back to the early 1900s. This was back when working as a nurse was still seen as a “women’s job,” which incidentally, let women in the medical field play a huge role in developing the modern physical therapy techniques we use today. These efforts began as exercises for helping patients with polio. Then, when World War I broke out, many

The good news is that physical therapy has been found to be a great alternative for so many of the conditions opioids used to be prescribed for. Better still, it’s more affordable than medication regimens or surgery. From Hippocrates to our own physicians here at Cornerstone PT & Wellness Center, one fact has always remained the same. Therapists love helping people heal. We’re proud to be part of this expanding field as it adapts to meet the needs of the world today!

army nurses adapted these techniques to rehabilitate wounded soldiers. This laid the groundwork for when Mary McMillan organized what would become the American Physical Therapy Association.

The Best Locations for Spring Blooms

IN THESE BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONS See Spring Bloom Spring is here, which means beautiful flowers are finally showing themselves after a long winter. Here are some of the best places in the U.S. to see flower blossoms and welcome the season. GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS The Great Smoky Mountains National Park stretches across North Carolina and Tennessee, and while its scenery is beautiful year-round, the park is especially alluring to nature enthusiasts during the spring. Through this season, miles of lady’s-slipper orchids, irises, cardinal flowers, and lilies dot its lush green landscape. It’s dubbed “Wildflower National Park” throughout this time of year, and you can experience it by car or on foot. The park also offers expert-led tours that weave through the flowers during their peak bloom. CRESTED BUTTE Crested Butte, Colorado, is best known for its winter sports and summer hikes. But recently it has drawn the attention of flower enthusiasts for its unique pink, orange, and gold alpine wildflowers that appear in the spring. This natural phenomenon even inspired the creation of the annual Wildflower

Festival in midsummer, which features nature walks, art, photography, culinary experiences, and more. For a truly unique experience, you can even ascend the town’s titular Crested Butte to spot some rare alpine sunflowers next to the picturesque West Elk Mountains. ANTELOPE VALLEY The California Poppy Reserve in Lancaster, California, is a 1,780-acre park that features sloping hills covered with fields of vibrant orange, yellow, and red poppies in the spring. Warm temperatures and heavy rainfall across Southern California during this time of year create a brief period of thick blooms as far as the eye can see. And while the poppies can be enjoyed from the comfort of your car, the best way to experience them is to walk the leisurely Antelope Loop Trail for a breathtaking, up-close adventure. Spring flora is gorgeous and naturally attracts large crowds of people every year. If you plan to visit any of these destinations, just remember that their ecosystems are delicate. Respect park signs, stay on designated trails, and do your part to make sure these flowers return year after year for future generations to enjoy.
