LOW BACK, HIP, & KNEE ARTHRITIS PAIN Leave Your Pain Behind
If you’re constantly facing lower back, hip and knee pain—you might be feeling arthritis. According to a recent study, approximately 17 percent of adults are diagnosed with some form of arthritis per year. As we age, our bones wear down. Are yours? If they are, don’t worry. It’s possible to alleviate the symptoms. It’s even possible to eliminate them entirely. If you have regular aches and pains, keep reading. We have a solution. What Is Arthritis, Exactly? Arthritis—or the painful stiffness, or inflammation, of joints—isn’t a single disease. The term “arthritis” is an informal explanation of joint pain and disease in general. Over 100 types of arthritis exist, asserts the Arthritis Foundation. People of all ages, races and sex can get it. It’s also the leading cause of ongoing disability. What Causes Lower Back, Hip and Knee Arthritis? Because arthritis is a catch-all term, pinpointing what causes arthritis may be difficult. In most cases, arthritis is caused by injuries. These injuries degenerate bones, joints and cartilage, resulting in the pain. Arthritis can also
be caused by: • Infections, such as Lyme disease • An immune system dysfunction • The inheritance of osteoarthritis • An abnormal metabolism, which leads to gout Simply walking can cause arthritis in the lower back, hip and knee. Our legs wear down as they’re used. Sometimes, old age is simply the culprit as use wears away at our joints and bone tissue. This type of arthritis, called degenerative arthritis— or osteoarthritis—is themost common kind of arthritis. When the leg’s cartilage—or its slick, cushioned surface—is worn away, bone rubs against bone. This pain, stiffness and swelling requires professional osteoarthritis treatment. Arthritis & Physiotherapy Regardless of the cause of arthritis, physiotherapy serves a purpose in most cases. Often, severe arthritis may require medication, hot and cold therapy or even surgery. While maintaining a healthy weight, exercise and a good diet help, medical interventionmay eventually be needed.
During physiotherapy, the individual is trained to reach maximum mobility. They may also undergo exercises that reduce the pressure on arthritic spots. If a patient has undergone surgery, Post-Op physiotherapy can help them reclaim their mobility—as well as their lifestyle. If you or a loved one suffers from arthritis, you still have options. Contact our clinic today, and ask to speak with one of our health care professionals about ongoing physiotherapy or other treatments we offer that can restore mobility, comfort and quality of life. FEEL BETTER BY EATING BETTER
There’s no question that what you eat affects how you feel, and a healthy diet helps you feel better. The healthiest diet is one that emphasizes whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables and that includes lean protein and low- fat or no-fat dairy products. Combine a healthy diet with regular exercise, and you will find it helps your mood as well as your body. Here are some tips to help improve your mood and activity with the right nutrition: 1. Mix in Protein to Boost Mood. Like fiber, protein can help you to avoid blood sugar crashes. Some good sources of protein are chicken, fish, eggs, seeds and nuts, low-fat yogurt,
low-fat cheese and milk, tofu, and peanut butter. 2. Don’t Worry, “B” Happy. The B vitamins, including B6, B12, and folic acid, play a role in the production of brain chemicals that regulate mood. Especially if you have depression, be sure to consume foods rich in these vitamins. Good food sources for many B vitamins include shellfish, poultry, eggs, low-fat yogurt, and fortified breakfast cereals. Folic acid in particular is found mostly in leafy greens. 3. Drink Water. Sip water or other drinks with few or no calories to help maintain a healthy
weight. Keep a water bottle in your bag or at your desk to satisfy your thirst throughout the day. 4. Be Active Whenever You Can Set a goal to fit in at least 2½ hours of moderate physical activity in your week. Being active 10 minutes at a time also adds to your weekly total. Ask your friends or family to keep you company as you bike, jog, walk, or dance. Don’t forget to do some muscle strengthening activities twice a week. 5. Enjoy Your Food But Eat Less Use a smaller plate for meals to help control the amount of food and calories you eat.

FEATURED TECHNIQUE
Do you suffer from shoulder pain? If so, you’re not alone! In fact, over 80% of Canadian’s will suffer from shoulder pain at least one point in their life! SHOULDER PAIN JUNE 15th 9-10am, at Fall River
Active Release Technique Active Release Technique is a state of the art, highly successful soft-tissue assessment and therapy that is quickly becoming the gold-standard for treatment of myofascial (muscle & fascia), tendon, ligament, and nerve problems – including sports injuries, back pain, shoulder, elbow, and hand problems, knee pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, and many more common conditions. Dr. Stryniak and Dr. Vanderlinden are of only a handful clinicians certified to provide Active Release Therapy in Halifax and the surrounding area. You can think of an ART® treatment as a type of active massage. The practitioner will first shorten the muscle, tendon, ligament, or nerve, and then apply a very specific tension with their hands as you actively stretch and lengthen the tissues. As the tissue lengthens, the practitioner is able to assess the texture and tension to determine if it is healthy or contains scar tissue needing further treatment. When scar tissue adhesions are felt, the amount and direction of tension can be modified to treat the problematic area.
In this interactive and educational workshop at our Fall River location, Dr. Alex Vanderlinden will discuss the most common causes of shoulder pain and teach you the most common exercises he uses every day in the clinic for patients with shoulder pain. As a bonus, he will provide tips to avoid shoulder pain and a list of the most helpful stretches. Space is Limited, Sign Up Today!
