JULY 2024
NURSING BEYOND THE BEDSIDE Meet Tittle & Perlmuter’s Legal Nurse
When an attorney takes on a medical malpractice or injury case, it may involve thousands of pages of medical records, testimony from health care experts, and specific medical knowledge. The process can take hours, and that’s where a legal nurse like me comes in! Legal nurses can work with law firms from the time a client calls all the way through the trial. We are responsible for reviewing medical records related to cases, creating timelines for a client’s injuries, finding expert health witnesses, and acting as a bridge between our lawyers and the medical world. Not only do I provide expertise and hands-on skills from nursing, but I also get to help lawyers fight for people who are healing from sometimes traumatic injuries and pain. July is Medical Malpractice Awareness Month, and I’m honored to take this time to share what I do as a legal nurse at Tittle & Perlmuter. I got my start in nursing, working for 10 years in the adult ICU before switching to neonatal care. I had a blast caring for babies, but when COVID-19 struck, things became incredibly difficult in health care. Between the stressors of the hospital and my own five children at home, I wanted to find a new way to challenge myself in a new career. I have always been intrigued by the legal process and thought I could blend my skills and passions as a legal nurse. Leaving the patient’s bedside was scary, but over the last four years, I’ve found I still get to advocate for patients daily; it’s just in a different way. My primary role is assisting attorneys at the firm with their cases involving medical injuries or malpractice. I’m essentially a knowledge
base used to help screen cases for merit. When a call comes in, I review all the medical records, inspect the care surrounding the date in question, and share my opinion on whether the standard of care was met. If we decide to proceed with a case, I can dig into the records and help attorneys navigate the often lengthy information. Taking the daunting task of sifting through hundreds of records off our attorneys’ shoulders feels rewarding. I also find experts like nurses, physicians, and hospital administrators to gain their professional opinions on cases. I’m often in contact with clients so I have an accurate reflection of any treatments or medications they have to take. I love a good challenge, and I learn something new every day at Tittle & Perlmuter. One of the cool things about my clinical experience is that I worked with a wide variety of age groups. As a legal nurse, I still work with people from all different walks of life. Most people who come to us have had one of their worst days and are vulnerable. They are seeking answers and help. We can’t always tell exactly what happens every time, but we can identify system and personnel problems. The thought that something good can come from something bad is a really fulfilling part of the job for me. I am blessed that Tittle & Perlmuter has given me this opportunity to continue advocating for patients in need in this role. The entire staff focuses on connecting with clients, and they truly go out of their way to meet their needs.
for medical records, and a desire to care for others. Though I never imagined myself leaving the hospital setting, once I entered the world of legal nursing for this incredible firm, I never looked back. —Becca Kessler

When you go to the hospital or doctor, you should receive professional care that sets you on a healing path. LIQUID GOLD
The Myriad Benefits of Honey
Honey, the preferred snack of beloved children’s book character Winnie- the-Pooh, is a veritable superfood . Created in a bee’s unique crop-like organ known as the “honey stomach,” the natural product is often heated and
like diarrhea and stomach ulcers. As a natural anti-inflammatory, honey is also effective at reducing pain and inflammation. Honey has less of an impact on your blood sugar and is rife with bioactive substances that can improve your bodily health, especially for people with Type 2 diabetes.
distilled in a fashion similar to alcohol to improve its quality and whisk away microorganisms. If you want to build up your body’s immune system and try some flavorful new recipes, it may be time to incorporate honey into your diet. NATURAL SUPERFOOD Honey is one of the oldest known medicines and has a role in helping to manage disease. Bee -lieve it or not, honey is sweeter than sugar and packed with antioxidants to help combat cancer, arthritis, and heart disease! From a nutritional perspective, honey packs a punch. A single tablespoon of honey amounts to 64 calories and contains several helpful vitamins and minerals, including calcium, which helps maintain our bones and teeth, and potassium, which helps alleviate high blood pressure. HEALTHIER CONDIMENT Honey has myriad health-related benefits, from taming a sore throat to helping alleviate gastrointestinal problems
MEDICINAL GOLD The ancient Egyptians understood the healing powers of honey. They used it as a topical treatment for burns and other wounds. In fact, using honey on diabetic foot ulcers, a serious condition that often leads to limb amputation, produces a 97% healing rate. Children (over 1 year old) with a cough see better results after drinking honeyed water than a typical over-the- counter cough medicine. So, if you are looking for a way to incorporate more holistic treatments and enhance your diet, consider substituting sugar for honey. It is a medicinal and nutritional boon for the system!

TAKE A BREAK
SUMMER’S CALLING, SO ARE DISTRACTED DRIVERS Buckle Up and Beat the ‘100 Deadliest Days’ Summer’s here, bringing sunshine, vacations, and increased danger on the roads. Did you know the days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are known as the “100 Deadliest Days” of summer due to a significant increase in fatal crashes? Last year, there were 397 deaths in that period in Ohio, and 60% of all motorcycle crashes happen during these 100 days. As you hit the road to enjoy the sunny days of summer, it’s important to be extra cautious and aware of the heightened risks. Buckle up for fun and safety as we share the top tips to stay safe. DON’T DRIVE DISTRACTED. You should always take steps to reduce distractions while you are driving, especially during the deadliest days of summer. Make sure to drive defensively and follow all the rules of the road. Set your phone to do-not-disturb or airplane mode while you are behind the wheel, or assign one of your passengers to cellphone duty. Going on a road trip? Plan ahead so you have directions and know the weather conditions. BUCKLE UP. Seat belts have saved thousands of lives and can reduce your chances of being seriously injured or killed in a vehicle accident. Ensure you and everyone in the car are properly fastened in. Airbags are actually designed to work in conjunction with seatbelts, and if you aren’t wearing one, the force of the airbag can injure you. WATCH OUT FOR OTHER DRIVERS. You can’t control what other drivers do during this extra busy time. If you encounter a distracted or dangerous driver on the road, use extreme caution and try to maintain a safe distance from them. Here in Ohio, a passenger not driving can report risky driving behavior to the Ohio State Highway Patrol by texting or calling #677. You can also call 911 if you believe the behavior is a danger to others. Always pull over and stop the car to call if you are alone. Don’t let these 100 Deadliest Days put a damper on your summer fun. Following these simple tips and staying alert can ensure a safe and unforgettable journey for you and your loved ones. Now, crank up the tunes, roll down the windows, and hit the gas — but safely!
