TAKE A BREAK

SUMMER’S CALLING, SO ARE DISTRACTED DRIVERS Buckle Up and Beat the ‘100 Deadliest Days’ Summer’s here, bringing sunshine, vacations, and increased danger on the roads. Did you know the days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are known as the “100 Deadliest Days” of summer due to a significant increase in fatal crashes? Last year, there were 397 deaths in that period in Ohio, and 60% of all motorcycle crashes happen during these 100 days. As you hit the road to enjoy the sunny days of summer, it’s important to be extra cautious and aware of the heightened risks. Buckle up for fun and safety as we share the top tips to stay safe. DON’T DRIVE DISTRACTED. You should always take steps to reduce distractions while you are driving, especially during the deadliest days of summer. Make sure to drive defensively and follow all the rules of the road. Set your phone to do-not-disturb or airplane mode while you are behind the wheel, or assign one of your passengers to cellphone duty. Going on a road trip? Plan ahead so you have directions and know the weather conditions. BUCKLE UP. Seat belts have saved thousands of lives and can reduce your chances of being seriously injured or killed in a vehicle accident. Ensure you and everyone in the car are properly fastened in. Airbags are actually designed to work in conjunction with seatbelts, and if you aren’t wearing one, the force of the airbag can injure you. WATCH OUT FOR OTHER DRIVERS. You can’t control what other drivers do during this extra busy time. If you encounter a distracted or dangerous driver on the road, use extreme caution and try to maintain a safe distance from them. Here in Ohio, a passenger not driving can report risky driving behavior to the Ohio State Highway Patrol by texting or calling #677. You can also call 911 if you believe the behavior is a danger to others. Always pull over and stop the car to call if you are alone. Don’t let these 100 Deadliest Days put a damper on your summer fun. Following these simple tips and staying alert can ensure a safe and unforgettable journey for you and your loved ones. Now, crank up the tunes, roll down the windows, and hit the gas — but safely!
