By breakfast, strangers were comparing favorite songs as if we had already formed a small traveling club. Embarkation aboard American Symphony was refreshingly simple. ere were no airport-style corridors, no maze of terminals and no anxious hunt for an elevator bank. e ship’s four-story atrium was bright and inviting, sunlight poured through a tall wall of glass and traveled across open landings, pale wood, glass railings and so ly upholstered seating below. Instead of the gilt columns, chandeliers and casino shimmer I had associated with cruising, the architecture felt airy and contemporary, almost residential. e vertical openness made it easy to understand the ship at a glance, but the scale remained human. Even at its grandest, the atrium felt like a handsome gathering room rather than a lobby designed to announce its own importance.
