Bogus lottery scam warning
OPPwarn residents in the Five Counties re- gion to beware of any “too good to be true” emails or letters in the mail that appear to be surprise lottery wins or unexpected cheques. Police received a report about a senior citizen in North Dundas Township who received what appeared to be a bank draft from Blue Cross. The phony cheque came with instructions for him to cash the cheque and then send back a finder’s fee. The attempted transaction failed and bank officials notified police about the fraud attempt against a senior. Police report this type of fraud is a common method for con artists who target seniors. They also note that the fake lottery/prize scam is now the second-most commonmarketing complaint recorded in OPP statistics on consumer fraud. It also ranks fourth-highest in total dollar loss. Con artists count on the excitement of a surprise win or the chance to claima valued prize to snare victims with their fake lottery, sweepstake or contest scam.They also count on their victims being too ashamed and embarrassed about being tricked to want to report the crime. Au cours de la semaine du 29 juin au 6 juillet, la Police provinciale de l’Ontario, détachement de Russell, a répondu à 303 appels, dont 21 accidents routiers, 9 vols, 12 violences conjugales et 2 conducteurs en état d’ébriété. Les agents de la PPO ont inculpé un homme pour deux chefs de harcèlement. Un autre a été accusé pour bris de condi- tion, tandis qu’une femme a été accusée de violence conjugale, ayant porté des coups sur son mari, et une autre de violence avec une arme. Le 30 juin dernier, vers 22 h 26, des agents se sont rendus sur les lieux d’un accident impliquant un seul véhicule sur la route 600 ouest, dans la municipalité de La Nation. Constatant que le conducteur avait les facul- tés affaiblies, il a été arrêté sur la scène de l’accident et amené au poste pour d’autres tests. Yvan Larin, 63 ans, de La Nation, a été accusé de conduite avec les facultés affai- blies dépassant les 80 mg dans le sang. Il a été relâché avec la promesse de comparaître à la cour de L’Orignal le 22 juillet. Le samedi 4 juillet, vers 19 h 25, les agents de la PPO ont répondu à un appel concer- nant la conduite dangereuse d’un automobi- liste sur l’autoroute 17, à Clarence-Rockland. Une fois le véhicule stationné dans le parking d’un commerce, les agents ont procédé à un test d’alcoolémie, que le conducteur a échoué. Il a été arrêté et amené au poste pour d’autres tests. Robert Lawrie, 66 ans, de Pointe-Claire au Québec, a été formellement accusé de conduite avec facultés affaiblies et avec un taux de plus de 80 mg dans le sang. Il a été libéré avec la promesse de se présenter à la cour de L’Orignal le 22 juillet. Le 10 juillet, vers 8 h, des agents de la PPO se sont rendus à la bibliothèque de Rockland pour constater qu’une fenêtre avait été brisée. Selon les agents, les dommages auraient eu lieu à l’heure de la fermeture, la veille, vers les 20 h. La PPO demande l’aide du public concernant cet événement. Drunk drivers wanders off An Ottawa man drove his car into a ditch and then walked away from the scene to sleep things off at a friend’s house. Police arrested Afton Rof Penny, 24, of Ottawa and charged him with impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding 80 millimetres. The charges resulted from investigation of a late-night accident report July 11 in Alfred-Plantagenet Township. A Toyota Yaris was found in the ditch alongside the Concession Three road about half an hour before midnight. There was no one in the vehicle. Police later discovered the driver had walked away from the scene to a nearby friend’s house where he fell asleep. A talk with Penny led police to suspect he had been driving while impaired by alcohol. Penny’s case is scheduled for the Aug. 5 provincial court session in L’Orignal.
